APC Condemns Opposition’s “Misleading Narratives” About Tinubu Administration

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a sharp rebuke against opposition figures, accusing them of orchestrating a campaign of misinformation about President Bola Tinubu’s administration and its achievements since taking office.

In a statement issued Saturday from Sokoto, Malam Yusuf Abubakar Dingyadi, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the APC National Chairman, claimed that individuals and groups, particularly from opposition parties, have been leveraging social media platforms to distort the government’s accomplishments and undermine public confidence.

“These coordinated efforts appear driven by personal and political interests rather than genuine concern for national unity and development,” Dingyadi stated, pointing specifically to what he described as targeted misinformation campaigns in northern Nigeria, a region that has historically been politically competitive.

The statement comes amid growing public discourse about the administration’s economic policies, which have included controversial measures such as fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange market reforms. These policies have generated significant debate among Nigerians, with inflation reaching multi-decade highs in recent months.

Dingyadi specifically condemned what he characterized as “vulgar language, excessive criticism, and the spread of falsehoods” by government critics. “Such behavior is not expected from responsible citizens, particularly when considering the circumstances inherited by this administration,” he added.

The APC spokesperson urged Nigerians to instead recognize what he described as tangible progress in several key areas, including security improvements, ongoing infrastructure development, and reforms across critical sectors under President Tinubu’s leadership.

According to Dingyadi, the party’s National Working Committee, now under the leadership of Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda following recent changes in the party’s hierarchy, remains dedicated to implementing economic reforms, strengthening national security architecture, and improving essential services in agriculture, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social welfare.

Political analysts note that this pushback from the ruling party comes at a time of heightened political tension, with opposition parties gaining momentum in their criticism of government policies. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party have been particularly vocal about economic hardship facing ordinary Nigerians.

Dr. Aisha Mohammed, a political scientist at Bayero University Kano, told reporters: “This kind of rhetoric is typical in Nigeria’s political landscape, where ruling parties often accuse opposition of misinformation while opposition claims the government is failing. What matters ultimately is how policies translate to improved living conditions for citizens.”

Since taking office in May 2023, the Tinubu administration has embarked on what it terms “essential reforms” aimed at restructuring the economy. These include ending the decades-long fuel subsidy program and unifying the country’s multiple exchange rates—policies that international financial institutions have praised but that have also contributed to a cost-of-living crisis for many Nigerians.

The APC statement emphasized that despite criticism, the government remains committed to implementing policies that will eventually enhance living standards across the country, suggesting that current hardships are temporary sacrifices necessary for long-term economic stability.

Dingyadi concluded by urging the public to be wary of what he described as misleading narratives from opposition elements seeking political advantage, calling instead for patience as the government’s economic and security strategies take effect.

As Nigeria navigates these economic challenges, the war of words between the ruling party and opposition groups is likely to intensify, with public opinion ultimately determined by tangible improvements in security, inflation rates, and general welfare.
