APC Condemns Opposition for Spreading Misinformation About Tinubu Administration
Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a strong rebuke against opposition figures, accusing them of orchestrating a campaign of misinformation aimed at discrediting President Bola Tinubu’s administration and its achievements.
The accusations came through a statement issued Saturday in Sokoto by Malam Yusuf Abubakar Dingyadi, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the APC National Chairman. According to Dingyadi, certain individuals and groups, particularly from opposition parties, have been systematically using social media platforms to distort the government’s record since taking office in May 2023.
“These deliberate attempts to mislead the public are driven by personal and political interests rather than genuine concern for national unity and development,” Dingyadi stated. He particularly noted that much of this misinformation campaign appears targeted at northern Nigeria, a region that has historically been crucial in Nigerian electoral politics.
The statement comes amid growing economic challenges in Nigeria, where inflation has surged past 30 percent and the naira has experienced significant devaluation following economic reforms initiated by the Tinubu administration. These reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and floating of the currency, have generated considerable debate about their short-term impact on citizens versus potential long-term benefits.
Dingyadi specifically condemned what he characterized as “the use of vulgar language, excessive criticism, and the spread of falsehoods” by government critics, suggesting such approaches were unbecoming of responsible citizenship. He urged Nigerians to instead acknowledge what he described as substantial progress in security operations, ongoing infrastructure development projects, and reforms across key sectors under President Tinubu’s leadership.
The media aide emphasized that the APC’s National Working Committee, under Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda’s leadership, remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing economic reforms, strengthening national security apparatus, and improving critical sectors including agriculture, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social welfare.
Political analysts note that this pushback comes at a time when the administration faces mounting criticism over the cost of living crisis affecting millions of Nigerians. Several protests have occurred in major cities across the country in recent months, with demonstrators expressing frustration over economic hardship and questioning the government’s approach to addressing these challenges.
Opposition parties, particularly the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party, have been vocal in their criticism of Tinubu’s economic policies. They argue that while reforms may be necessary, the implementation has lacked adequate safeguards to protect vulnerable populations from economic shocks.
Social media has indeed become a battleground for Nigerian political narratives, with both government supporters and opponents utilizing these platforms to shape public opinion. The increasing polarization of political discourse online has raised concerns about information integrity and its impact on democratic processes in Africa’s most populous nation.
“The APC-led government will continue implementing policies aimed at enhancing the living standards of all Nigerians,” Dingyadi affirmed in the statement. He concluded by cautioning the public against what he termed “misleading narratives” propagated by opposition elements allegedly seeking political advantage rather than constructive engagement.
As Nigeria approaches the midpoint of Tinubu’s four-year term, the debate over his administration’s performance and the appropriate methods for critiquing government policies is likely to intensify further, with both ruling party and opposition figures competing to control the narrative around the country’s economic trajectory and governance.
