Anne Hathaway Clarifies Story About Size Inclusivity on ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ Set

Anne Hathaway is setting the record straight about a viral story regarding size inclusivity during the filming of “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” in which she reprises her role as Andy Sachs alongside Meryl Streep.

The conversation began when Streep revealed in a March Harper’s Bazaar cover story that Hathaway had approached producers on set about casting more size-inclusive models. Since then, Hathaway has faced repeated questions about the incident, with some social media users incorrectly suggesting that she advocated for certain models to be fired.

“It was just this kind of quick thing that happened on set and now it’s become a much bigger story,” Hathaway recently explained during an appearance on “Good Morning America.” She emphasized, “I do want to mention there’s a little misinformation getting out there right now that people were fired because of the size inclusivity and that just didn’t happen. Nobody lost their jobs—in fact, it created more jobs.”

Speaking to Variety at the film’s New York City premiere, Hathaway elaborated on what actually transpired during production. “I had noticed that we had beautiful models on set, and a lot of them were more traditionally model-sized,” she said. “I knew what the context of the scene was, and I thought the scene would be so much more enjoyable for the audience if we had just a wider range of bodies on display, because all different shapes are beautiful.”

Her approach was straightforward and constructive. “I just went to the producers and I asked that question: ‘Don’t you think the scene would be stronger if we had a more inclusive approach to sizing?'” The producers, according to Hathaway, were receptive and acted quickly. “They looked up and were so sad that they hadn’t thought about it. I think they were so locked in, just kind of going with the flow. But as soon as they saw it, they were the ones who made it happen in like an hour.”

While Hathaway couldn’t reveal specific details about the scene in question, she did mention it involves “a beautiful, amazing song” written by Lady Gaga, suggesting a fashion show or performance sequence. “Isn’t it better when you see so many different types of bodies up there with that?” she added.

The issue of body diversity remains significant in the fashion and entertainment industries, where historically narrow beauty standards have prevailed. The original “Devil Wears Prada” film, released in 2006, offered a critical look at the fashion magazine industry but largely featured models who conformed to traditional industry size expectations.

Streep’s initial comments to Harper’s Bazaar highlighted her own discomfort with what she observed on set. “I was surprised by how skinny the models were,” Streep said, adding that “Annie clocked it too, and she made a beeline to the producers about it, securing promises that the models in the show that we were putting together for our film would not be so skeletal! She’s a stand-up girl.”

Hathaway’s advocacy reflects a broader cultural shift toward body positivity and inclusivity in media representation. Major fashion brands and publications have increasingly embraced models of various sizes in recent years, though progress remains inconsistent across the industry.

“The Devil Wears Prada 2,” one of the most anticipated sequels of the year, comes two decades after the original film became a cultural phenomenon and grossed over $326 million worldwide. The sequel, which opens in theaters on May 1, returns to the world of high fashion and the notoriously demanding editor Miranda Priestly, played by Streep.

The film arrives at a time when conversations about representation, inclusivity, and workplace dynamics in the fashion industry continue to evolve significantly since the 2006 original.
