Arab Media Organizations Join Forces to Combat Digital Misinformation

Al-Fanar Media and Arabi Facts Hub have signed a groundbreaking agreement to combat the growing tide of misinformation and disinformation in Arabic online content. The partnership, formalized through a protocol between the two nonprofit organizations, aims to bolster fact-checking capabilities and promote media literacy across the Arab world.

The collaboration will leverage each organization’s strengths to develop joint training programs for journalists, researchers, and students. Their shared initiatives will include fact-checking seminars, panel discussions at Arab universities, and the distribution of educational materials about media literacy and open-source information verification techniques.

“Al-Fanar Media’s strategy is built on coordinating efforts and establishing partnerships with Arab and international institutions to help Arab youth combat misinformation and rumors,” said Mohammad El-Hawary, Al-Fanar Media’s executive director and editor-in-chief. “We do this by producing training and educational material and organizing events to try to create responsible content creators for traditional media and social media audiences.”

The agreement comes at a critical time when digital misinformation continues to spread rapidly across social media platforms, often outpacing legitimate news sources. Both organizations recognized the urgent need for stronger verification protocols and more robust digital literacy in Arabic-speaking communities.

Al-Fanar Media has already established itself as a leader in this field through several initiatives. The organization recently joined UNESCO’s Alliance for Media and Information Literacy and has conducted media literacy workshops for university students across Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia. Their “Gen Z project” specifically targets young content creators, training them in professional journalism standards with an emphasis on social media content creation.

For its part, Arabi Facts Hub has built a reputation as an independent platform dedicated to promoting fact-checking culture in the Arab region. The organization works extensively with journalists, researchers, and media students to develop critical verification skills.

Maha Salah El-Din, head of communications and partnerships at Arabi Facts Hub, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting that it “opens new horizons for cooperation in media literacy to address the information disorder in the Arab region.” She emphasized that their planned training, academic, and editorial projects will significantly enhance journalism and fact-checking capabilities regionwide.

The rise of misinformation has particular significance in the Arab world, where social and political tensions often create fertile ground for the spread of false information. Recent conflicts, including the war in Gaza, have been accompanied by waves of misinformation across digital platforms, making the partnership’s mission especially timely.

“Our world today is extremely complex, yet highly interconnected in terms of shared destiny and risks,” El-Hawary noted. “It requires flexibility, the exchange of expertise and best practices, and understanding specific societies when providing resources that let communities, often led by young people, tackle these common challenges in a responsible manner.”

The formal agreement is valid for one year with automatic renewal provisions. Both organizations have expressed hope that their joint efforts will raise public awareness about misinformation and help curb its spread through education and training.

Al-Fanar Media, an independent news organization covering higher education, research, and culture in the Arab world, provides content in both Arabic and English. Arabi Facts Hub specializes in promoting fact-checking culture through training, content production, and support for investigative journalism.

This partnership represents part of a broader strategy by Al-Fanar Media to expand its impact through strategic collaborations, building on its established reputation as a trusted source of information in the region. As digital misinformation continues to challenge traditional information ecosystems, such partnerships may prove crucial in maintaining information integrity in the digital age.
