On the occasion of World AIDS Day on December 1, the AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections Helpline will extend its hours of operation from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., offering an extraordinary day of service to the public. The toll-free number, 800861061, provides anonymous counseling to anyone seeking information about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

According to recent data released by Italy’s Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), which manages the helpline, the service received 5,453 calls between January 1 and November 25, 2025. This represents an average of 25 calls daily, with half of these coming from first-time users seeking guidance and information.

The helpline’s counselors addressed 17,904 questions during this period, demonstrating the continued need for reliable information about sexual health in the community. The majority of inquiries focused on HIV transmission routes, testing procedures for various sexually transmitted infections, and psycho-social concerns including discrimination and stigma that continue to affect those living with or concerned about HIV/AIDS.

“Despite medical advances in HIV treatment and prevention, misinformation and stigma persist in many communities,” said a representative from the ISS’s Psycho-social-behavioural Research, Communication, and Training Operational Unit, which oversees the helpline. “Our counselors provide evidence-based information while offering emotional support to callers who may be experiencing anxiety or confusion.”

The extended hours on World AIDS Day aim to increase accessibility to this vital public health resource. The service has also taken steps to ensure inclusivity, creating special accommodations for deaf individuals who can now access counseling by completing a dedicated form on the ISS website while maintaining their confidentiality.

One of the key messages the helpline promotes is the importance of testing, especially for individuals who may have been exposed to HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. Early detection remains crucial for effective treatment and prevention of further transmission. To support this effort, the ISS recently completed a comprehensive mapping of testing centers throughout Italy, identifying 628 locations where individuals can receive testing services.

This mapping project, finalized in November 2025, represents an important step in connecting Italians with local resources for sexual health. Many of these centers offer rapid testing options with results available in minutes, removing barriers to knowing one’s status.

Public health experts emphasize that helplines like 800861061 play a critical role in the broader strategy to combat HIV/AIDS. By providing accurate information and compassionate support, these services help reduce transmission rates while improving outcomes for those already living with the virus.

The World AIDS Day initiative comes as global health organizations continue to work toward the goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. While significant progress has been made in treatment and prevention, challenges remain, including reaching underserved populations, combating persistent stigma, and ensuring universal access to antiretroviral therapies.

The AIDS and STI Helpline represents one component of Italy’s multi-faceted approach to addressing these challenges, combining education, testing promotion, and psychological support in a confidential format accessible to all citizens.

Individuals with questions about HIV, AIDS, or other sexually transmitted infections are encouraged to take advantage of the extended hours on December 1 by calling 800861061 between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
