Pakistani Leadership Reaffirms Press Freedom Commitment on World Press Freedom Day
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have jointly reaffirmed the Pakistani government’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting press freedom as the nation observes World Press Freedom Day under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace.”
In their separate messages, both leaders emphasized the critical role responsible journalism plays in strengthening democratic institutions and fostering national unity across Pakistan. Their statements underscored the vital connection between credible information and a healthy democracy.
President Zardari extended greetings to media professionals worldwide while warning of emerging threats to press freedom that have gained momentum in the digital age. He specifically highlighted the dangers of misinformation campaigns, artificial intelligence misuse, algorithmic manipulation, and undue pressure from powerful tech platforms and social media companies.
“Such forces can distort public discourse and weaken democratic values,” Zardari cautioned, while reaffirming Pakistan’s constitutional commitment to press freedom under Articles 19 and 19-A.
The president emphasized that this year’s theme reflects how peace depends fundamentally on truth, and truth in turn relies on courageous journalism. However, he balanced this by stressing that freedom brings responsibility.
“Accuracy must not be sacrificed for speed, and balance must not give way to partisanship,” Zardari noted. “Public trust, the most valuable asset of free press, must be earned, protected and never taken for granted.”
Zardari specifically praised Pakistani media’s unified response during Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, noting how journalists effectively countered false narratives and helped maintain national cohesion during a critical period. He also paid tribute to journalists who have sacrificed their lives pursuing truth, calling for enhanced protections and safer working conditions for media professionals throughout the country.
In his separate message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized journalism’s vital role in building an informed society. He characterized authentic, unbiased, and verified reporting as the foundation of professional journalism.
“Responsible journalism contributes to peace by shaping informed public opinion and strengthening international understanding,” the prime minister stated.
Sharif acknowledged the sacrifices made by journalists who have lost their lives while performing their duties. He noted the importance of adapting to digital transformation while maintaining journalistic credibility and professional standards.
The prime minister warned against the proliferation of fake news and disinformation campaigns, calling on journalists to uphold verification standards, integrity, and professional ethics. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and enabling environment for press freedom across Pakistan.
Sharif also emphasized that media can play a constructive role in strengthening international relations, economic cooperation, and societal harmony. He stressed that while speed is important in today’s digital media landscape, it should never compromise accuracy and verification, as public trust remains journalism’s most valuable asset.
The leadership’s statements come at a time when Pakistan’s media landscape continues to face challenges, including economic pressures, digital disruption, and safety concerns for journalists, particularly in conflict zones.
World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3rd, was established by the United Nations to raise awareness about press freedom issues globally and to celebrate fundamental principles of press freedom around the world.
