A teenage girl from Tuscarawas County who disappeared over the weekend was found hundreds of miles away with a man nearly a decade her senior, in what authorities describe as a textbook case of social media predation.
The 15-year-old girl, who went missing from her home early Sunday morning, was located later that same day in Wisconsin in the company of Jordan Romine, a 24-year-old married man from Dayton.
According to Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Captain Detective Adam Fisher, the pair initially connected on a social media platform where Romine allegedly misrepresented himself to both the girl and her parents.
“It does appear that this is one of those textbook things of what we in law enforcement and others warn the community about,” Fisher explained. “These relationships are established or made and are oftentimes misleading as to ages. There is some suggestion that in this particular case that this suspect had originally misled the juvenile and her parents that he was only a year in age difference from her.”
Authorities believe the teenager left her home around midnight Sunday and traveled with Romine to Wisconsin. They were located that same afternoon thanks to license-plate-reading camera technology that has become increasingly vital in missing persons cases across the country.
Fisher emphasized that without such modern surveillance systems, the search might have continued much longer, potentially putting the minor in greater danger.
While Romine currently faces one initial charge of interference with custody, investigators indicated additional charges are likely as the case develops. He remains in custody in Wisconsin awaiting extradition back to Ohio, where he will face formal legal proceedings.
The case highlights growing concerns about online predators using social media to target vulnerable minors. According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, reports of online enticement increased 97.5% between 2019 and 2020, with the trend continuing upward as social media usage expands among younger demographics.
“While it may appear that our juvenile victim willingly was with the suspect at certain aspects of this along their travels, it’s definitely alarming how much manipulation took place to get them to this point,” Fisher noted.
The detective’s comments reflect what child safety experts have long warned: predators often employ sophisticated grooming techniques over extended periods, gradually building trust before convincing minors to meet in person.
This case emerges amid increasing calls for stronger protections on social media platforms. Several states, including Ohio, have recently introduced legislation aimed at creating age-verification requirements and enhancing parental controls on social platforms.
Fisher used the incident to emphasize that online predation isn’t just a theoretical danger but a real threat in communities across America.
“These scenarios that we hear about… they’re not made-up scenarios. They do happen here,” he said. “These situations occur frequently, and social media is facilitating these relationships forming because we can be anybody we want to be on the other side of a keyboard or the other side of screen.”
Child safety advocates recommend parents maintain open communication with children about online activities, monitor their social media accounts, and educate them about potential dangers of sharing personal information or meeting people they’ve only communicated with online.
The swift recovery in this case represents a best-case outcome in a situation that could have ended much worse. Authorities credit the coordination between multiple law enforcement agencies and the deployment of advanced surveillance technology for the teenager’s safe return.
As the investigation continues, officials have not released additional details about the victim to protect her privacy.
