Former Iranian State Journalist Accused of Manipulating US Media Trust Ratings

An investigative report by the Washington Free Beacon has revealed that Meysam Zamanabadi, a former state-affiliated journalist from Iran, is now working as a media analyst in the United States, allegedly distorting media credibility ratings to favor left-leaning outlets.

According to the report, Zamanabadi, who previously wrote for Iranian government-affiliated newspapers, is now employed by Ad Fontes Media, an organization that rates American news outlets on reliability and political bias. The Free Beacon’s investigation, based on research by media analyst Alana Goodman, claims Zamanabadi has been producing media bias charts that consistently rank Democratic-aligned media sources as more trustworthy than Republican-leaning outlets.

The revelation raises concerns about potential foreign influence on American media perception, particularly as Zamanabadi’s assessments are being distributed to prominent institutions including Cornell University and the Poynter Institute, a respected journalism research center.

The Free Beacon report highlights Zamanabadi’s previous employment at Hamshahri newspaper, a publication owned by the Tehran Municipality. During his tenure there from 2008 to 2009, the newspaper was under the oversight of Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, then mayor of Tehran and now a prominent political figure in Iran. Ghalibaf currently serves as Speaker of the Parliament of Iran, and Zamanabadi reportedly maintains a role as his advisor.

Hamshahri newspaper has drawn international criticism in the past, notably for hosting a controversial Holocaust-denial cartoon contest in 2006, which sparked diplomatic tensions and widespread condemnation from Western governments and human rights organizations.

The investigation points to specific examples of alleged bias in Zamanabadi’s media assessments. According to the report, he has consistently rated Jacobin, a socialist magazine, as more reliable than established conservative publications like National Review and the New York Post, despite these outlets’ longer journalistic histories and established editorial standards.

In the television news sector, the report alleges that Zamanabadi’s ratings systematically favor MSNBC personalities like Chris Hayes and former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki over Fox News hosts including Laura Ingraham and Jesse Watters, portraying the former as substantially more credible.

Media bias ratings have become increasingly influential in the American information ecosystem, with educators, social media platforms, and news consumers using these assessments to guide their content choices and information literacy efforts. Ad Fontes Media’s “Media Bias Chart” is widely referenced as a tool for identifying reliable news sources across the political spectrum.

The allegations raise questions about the objectivity of such rating systems and the potential for foreign influence in shaping American media consumption patterns. Media experts have long debated the challenges of quantifying bias and reliability in journalism, with some arguing that truly objective measures remain elusive.

Neither Ad Fontes Media nor Zamanabadi has publicly responded to the allegations as of this report. The Washington Free Beacon, which broke the story, is itself a conservative-leaning publication founded in 2012 that focuses on political reporting and analysis.

This case emerges amid broader concerns about foreign influence operations targeting American information spaces, with intelligence agencies having previously warned about various nations’ efforts to manipulate public opinion through both traditional and social media channels.

Media literacy experts recommend that consumers rely on multiple sources for assessing news credibility rather than depending solely on single rating systems, especially as the landscape of news evaluation becomes increasingly complex and potentially vulnerable to various forms of bias.
