Russian media have been caught spreading manipulated footage from Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf’s recent visit to Ukraine, falsely suggesting a diplomatic snub between the monarch and President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The deceptive video, which began circulating on Russian state media and Telegram channels shortly after the King’s April 17 arrival in Lviv, was deliberately edited to exclude a handshake between the two leaders. The doctored clip shows their meeting on a red carpet but cuts away precisely at the moment when the greeting would have occurred.

A review of the complete footage, available on YouTube and through official channels, clearly shows Carl XVI Gustaf and Zelensky warmly greeting each other with a firm handshake. Photographic evidence of this cordial exchange has been published on both the Ukrainian President’s Office website and the official social media accounts of the Swedish Royal Court, directly contradicting the Russian narrative.

This incident represents the latest attempt in Russia’s ongoing disinformation campaign targeting Ukraine’s international standing. The apparent goal was to create a false impression of Zelensky’s diplomatic isolation and suggest growing international disapproval of Ukraine’s leadership during a critical phase of the war.

“This is a classic example of selective editing to create a completely false narrative,” noted one disinformation expert who requested anonymity due to security concerns. “By removing just a few seconds of footage, they attempt to rewrite an entire diplomatic relationship.”

The Swedish monarch’s April 17-18 visit to Ukraine marked his first since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. During his stay, the King participated in several significant events, including delivering humanitarian assistance and visiting the Superhumans Center, a specialized modern facility in Lviv dedicated to treating war trauma patients.

Carl XVI Gustaf also paid tribute to Ukrainian defenders killed in the conflict with Russia, further demonstrating Sweden’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The timing of this disinformation effort is particularly noteworthy, as it comes amid Sweden’s increasingly substantial backing of Ukraine. The Nordic nation now ranks among the five largest donors supporting both Ukraine’s armed forces and civilian population.

Just two months before the King’s visit, on February 19, the Swedish government had announced its twenty-first aid package for Ukraine, valued at nearly 12.9 billion Swedish kronor (approximately $1.42 billion). This commitment represents one of the most significant military assistance packages in Sweden’s history and underscores the country’s deepening involvement in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.

The fabricated handshake controversy follows other recent Russian propaganda efforts, including false claims about Ukraine planning mass mobilization of women for military service. These coordinated disinformation campaigns appear designed to undermine Western support for Ukraine while sowing doubt about the country’s leadership.

Media analysts point out that such manipulated content has become increasingly sophisticated and requires vigilant fact-checking. The rapid spread of the doctored video across multiple platforms demonstrates how quickly disinformation can circulate in the modern media environment.

Despite these propaganda efforts, diplomatic relations between Sweden and Ukraine remain strong. The royal visit, which proceeded smoothly according to all legitimate accounts, served to reinforce the bilateral ties between the two nations at a time when Ukraine continues to rely on international partnerships in its defense against Russian aggression.

Swedish officials have not formally commented on the manipulated video, seemingly preferring to let the abundant photographic and video evidence of the cordial meeting speak for itself.
