Police Investigate Park Chulmin for False Allegations Against President Lee
South Korean police have launched an investigation into Park Chulmin, a former member of the criminal organization known as the “Seongnam Gukje Mafia,” for allegedly making false accusations against President Lee Jaemyung regarding ties to organized crime.
According to a statement from the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency on April 25, authorities are examining charges that Park filed false allegations against the president. The investigation comes after a formal complaint Park submitted to the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office ahead of the 2021 presidential election.
In his complaint, Park claimed that then-Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee maintained close connections with Lee Junseok, the former CEO of Komatrade who has also been linked to the Seongnam Gukje Mafia, and an individual identified only as Kim, who was reportedly involved in a murder case in Pattaya, Thailand.
The Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office subsequently transferred the case to the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency for further investigation. After reviewing the evidence, police concluded that Park’s allegations were unfounded, leading to the current investigation against him for false accusations.
This case has been developing alongside a related legal matter involving attorney Jang Youngha, who worked with Park in raising suspicions about President Lee’s alleged criminal connections. On March 12, the Supreme Court upheld a sentence against Jang of one year in prison, suspended for two years, for violating the Public Official Election Act by spreading false information.
During several press conferences, Jang had publicly claimed, based on Park’s statements, that President Lee received approximately 2 billion won (approximately $1.5 million USD) from the Seongnam Gukje Mafia group in exchange for providing business favors. These allegations were ultimately deemed false by the court.
Following the finalization of Jang’s conviction, President Lee took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to address the situation. “There are still many people in the world who believe I am connected to organized crime,” Lee wrote. He further criticized media outlets that “report without verifying facts, those that deliberately distort or fabricate the news, and those that irresponsibly repeat unsubstantiated false claims,” describing such practices as “more dangerous than any weapon.”
The case highlights ongoing tensions in South Korean politics, where allegations of corruption and criminal connections continue to be powerful political weapons. It also underscores the legal consequences of making unsubstantiated claims against public officials, particularly during election periods when such accusations can have significant impact.
The criminal group at the center of these allegations, the Seongnam Gukje Mafia, has been a notorious organization operating in the Seongnam area, a city in Gyeonggi Province. The group has been linked to various criminal activities over the years, making any alleged connection to political figures particularly damaging.
Reports indicate that Park himself was sentenced to one year and six months in prison in August 2024 on charges similar to those faced by attorney Jang, further undermining the credibility of his allegations against President Lee.
The case has attracted significant attention in South Korean media, particularly given President Lee’s prominence in national politics. Legal experts note that the prosecution of individuals making false accusations serves as a reminder of the importance of evidence-based claims in political discourse, especially regarding alleged criminal connections.
As the investigation into Park continues, political observers will be watching closely to see if any additional evidence emerges regarding the original allegations or if the case will further solidify the view that the claims against President Lee were indeed fabricated for political purposes.
