Philippine Airlines Confirms No Involvement of Sebastian Duterte in OFW Repatriation Efforts

A viral social media claim suggesting that Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte chartered a Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight to repatriate overseas Filipino workers from the Middle East has been debunked as false.

The Facebook reel, which has amassed over 2.7 million views and more than 112,000 reactions, featured text claiming “Baste Duterte Nagpadala Ng Philippines Airlines Para makauwi MGA OFW” (Baste Duterte sent a Philippine Airlines aircraft to bring home OFWs). The post prompted numerous supportive comments praising Duterte for his supposed humanitarian effort.

However, Philippine Airlines has explicitly denied the claim. In a statement, PAL clarified: “There is no specific mention of Baste Duterte leading or sending a Philippine Airlines airplane for the repatriation of OFWs from the Middle East. Philippine Airlines has been involved in repatriation efforts, but these are typically coordinated with government authorities and not attributed to a single individual.”

No credible news sources or official announcements from Mayor Duterte’s verified social media accounts have corroborated the claim. The original post failed to provide any evidence or citation from official sources to support its assertion.

The timing of the false claim coincides with ongoing tensions in the Middle East, where approximately 2.4 million Filipinos currently reside. Of these, about 1.1 million are land-based overseas workers who contributed more than $6.48 billion to the Philippine economy in 2025.

Repatriation efforts for Filipinos in conflict zones are typically managed through official government channels. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed several government agencies to coordinate repatriation assistance, including the Department of Migrant Workers, Department of Foreign Affairs, and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

OFWs seeking repatriation assistance have legitimate channels available to them, including the eGovPH app, official hotlines, email communications, and Philippine embassies abroad. These established protocols ensure systematic and coordinated evacuation efforts during crisis situations.

This isn’t the first time misleading information has circulated regarding Duterte and OFW-related matters. Previous fact-checks have debunked claims about his diplomatic engagements, including a misrepresented meeting with Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan that was falsely portrayed as an effort to seek assistance for OFW evacuation.

The spread of misinformation regarding OFW repatriation is particularly concerning given the vulnerability of Filipino workers in conflict regions. False narratives attributing repatriation efforts to individual politicians rather than institutional processes can create confusion about proper assistance channels during emergencies.

Social media platforms continue to be breeding grounds for such misinformation, with emotionally resonant content often spreading rapidly despite lacking factual basis. The viral nature of this particular claim demonstrates how easily unverified information can reach millions, potentially misleading overseas Filipinos about available repatriation resources.

Government agencies have consistently urged the public to verify information through official channels and to report suspicious content that may spread disinformation, especially regarding matters affecting vulnerable citizens like OFWs in crisis situations.
