A viral video of Rahul Gandhi accompanying a young woman has become the subject of false and misleading claims on social media, with an investigation revealing the woman is actually his niece, Miraya Vadra.

The video, which began circulating widely on November 12, shows the Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha with a young woman at what appears to be an airport. Social media user Arun Yadav shared the footage with suggestive claims, writing: “56-year-old flag leader of Congress has been seen with a young woman abroad.”

The post quickly gained traction, with numerous accounts resharing the video alongside objectionable insinuations about Gandhi’s character. However, a thorough investigation by fact-checking organization Vishvas News has conclusively determined these claims to be false and misleading.

According to the investigation, the video dates back to September 2025 and shows Gandhi with his niece, Miraya Vadra, who is the daughter of his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The footage appears to have been captured at London’s Heathrow Airport.

Supriya Shrinate, national spokesperson for the Congress party, addressed the false narrative in a post on the social platform X on November 13. “Those circulating the September 2025 video of Rahul Gandhi with his niece and claiming it’s current footage from London are complete liars,” Shrinate wrote, condemning those spreading the misinformation.

Additional verification came from Girish Kumar, a member of the Congress’s social media team, who confirmed to investigators that the young woman in the video is indeed Miraya Vadra. Visual comparison of previously published photos of Miraya Vadra with the woman in the video also confirmed her identity.

The spread of this misinformation highlights the growing challenge of digital disinformation in India’s increasingly polarized political landscape. Political figures, particularly high-profile opposition leaders, often find themselves targets of misleading narratives designed to damage their public image.

This incident comes amid heightened political tensions in India, where social media has become a battleground for political messaging ahead of various state elections. Fact-checkers have noted a concerning rise in the use of decontextualized videos and images to create false narratives about political figures.

The original post came from an X account with over 66,000 followers. Created in November 2022, the account belongs to a user identifying as a resident of Gurugram. The substantial following of such accounts often enables rapid dissemination of misinformation before fact-checks can reach the same audience.

Digital rights advocates have repeatedly called for more responsible social media use, particularly when it comes to sharing content about public figures. They emphasize the importance of verifying information before sharing and being wary of posts designed to provoke emotional reactions.

This case serves as yet another reminder of how family moments of public figures can be manipulated and presented out of context to create misleading narratives in today’s digital information ecosystem.

Neither Rahul Gandhi nor Miraya Vadra have personally commented on the misleading claims at the time of reporting.
