Global conflicts have reached post-World War II highs as the United States tightens economic pressure on Russia’s allies, according to multiple international security sources.

President Trump has authorized sweeping sanctions legislation that would impose 500% tariffs on countries supporting Moscow as the Ukraine conflict approaches its fourth year, the Associated Press reports. The measure represents a significant escalation in economic deterrence against Russia’s international partners.

The Ukraine-Russia war, however, represents just one flashpoint in what security experts describe as an unprecedented global surge in armed conflicts.

Data from the Global Peace Index reveals that more than 60 state-based armed conflicts were recorded globally in 2023 and 2024, marking the highest level since record-keeping began after World War II. This year alone, researchers have documented 61 ongoing conflicts across 36 countries, underscoring the widespread nature of current global instability.

In Sudan, a devastating civil war between competing military factions has raged for over three years, creating a massive humanitarian crisis and displacing millions. Despite numerous diplomatic initiatives, the conflict shows few signs of resolution.

The Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza continues despite repeated ceasefire attempts, with civilian casualties mounting and regional stability increasingly threatened. The fighting has drawn in multiple regional actors and raised concerns about a wider Middle Eastern war.

Myanmar remains embroiled in a complex civil war as ethnic armed organizations continue their struggle against the country’s military government, which seized power in a 2021 coup. The conflict has created significant refugee flows and humanitarian challenges throughout Southeast Asia.

In West Africa, Nigeria battles persistent insurgencies from extremist groups, including Boko Haram, which the United States designates as a foreign terrorist organization. The violence has destabilized large portions of the country and spilled into neighboring nations.

Perhaps most concerning to international security experts is the simmering tension between Israel and Iran. Though not in a declared war, both nations have engaged in proxy conflicts and limited direct exchanges. Analysts warn that miscalculation from either side could rapidly escalate into a broader regional conflict with global implications.

The Council on Foreign Relations notes that while the United States is not officially at war in any of these major conflicts, it maintains significant involvement through various means. America’s approach has shifted from large-scale ground wars to what security analysts describe as “persistent, global, lower-level military engagement.”

This strategic shift includes maintaining an extensive military footprint across the Middle East with permanent bases and naval assets. U.S. forces continue limited combat and counterterrorism operations in countries including Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Somalia.

Additionally, the United States provides substantial indirect support to allies through weapons sales, financial assistance, intelligence sharing, and deterrence strategies in key flashpoints such as Ukraine, Israel-Gaza, and the Taiwan Strait.

The recently approved Russian sanctions bill exemplifies this approach, using economic rather than direct military power to influence global conflicts. The 500% tariff mechanism represents one of the most aggressive economic measures deployed in recent years, potentially affecting numerous countries maintaining trade relationships with Moscow.

Security experts emphasize that this convergence of multiple significant conflicts, coupled with great power competition between the United States, Russia, and China, creates a particularly volatile international environment. The current global security landscape demonstrates how regional conflicts increasingly connect to broader geopolitical tensions, creating complex challenges for policymakers and international organizations.

As these conflicts evolve, the role of economic sanctions, proxy support, and limited military engagements will likely continue shaping American foreign policy in what has become the most conflict-ridden period since 1946.
