False Video of US Jet Evading Iranian Missiles Circulates Amid Middle East Tensions

Misinformation continues to spread on social media platforms as tensions escalate in the Middle East, with a digitally created simulation being passed off as genuine combat footage between American and Iranian forces.

Several Facebook accounts have been sharing a 32-second video clip purportedly showing an American fighter jet skillfully evading missiles fired by Iranian forces. Despite gaining significant traction online, fact-checking efforts have confirmed the footage is entirely fabricated.

The video, which first appeared on March 1, depicts aerial footage of what’s claimed to be a U.S. jet fighter performing impressive evasive maneuvers to dodge an incoming “Iranian” missile. At one point in the simulation, the aircraft executes a sharp vertical turn to escape the pursuing projectile.

Text overlaid on the video in Filipino praised the supposed American pilot’s exceptional skills: “Galing talaga ng mga Piloto ng jet fighter ng america” (The pilot of the American jet fighter is really skilled). The caption further emphasized this narrative: “Di umubra ang mga missile ng iran sa galing ng pilito” (Iran’s missiles were no match for the pilot’s skill).

The deceptive content quickly spread, with at least two Facebook users reposting it on March 1 and 2. One version of the repost altered the narrative, claiming the aircraft was flown by an Israeli pilot rather than an American, while also adding warnings for Filipinos abroad to remain vigilant.

Digital forensic analysis through reverse image searches traced the original content to a YouTube channel called Creative Comparison, which published the clip as a “Short” on February 28. The channel specializes in creating military simulation content, as clearly stated in its description: it offers “high-quality military simulation content” with immersive combat scenarios designed to bring “realistic military simulation experiences to life.”

The original video’s caption explicitly identifies the content as a “high-fidelity simulation” featuring an American F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet and a Soviet-designed Osa-AKM anti-aircraft system. Even casual observers can spot the computer-generated elements in the footage, including cartoon-like landscape features visible at the beginning of the simulation.

This misinformation emerged against a backdrop of real military escalation in the Middle East. Just days before the video began circulating, the United States and Israel had conducted major military strikes against Iran on February 28. Iran subsequently retaliated by launching attacks targeting countries hosting U.S. military assets, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait.

The false representation has gained significant traction on social media platforms. One Facebook post alone accumulated 1.2 million views, 12,000 reactions, 300 comments, and was shared 900 times. Additional copies shared by other users garnered a combined 573,000 views, 449 comments, and 346 shares.

The rapid spread of this simulation highlights the ongoing challenge of digital misinformation during international conflicts. As tensions in the Middle East continue, verifying the authenticity of purported combat footage becomes increasingly important for accurate public understanding of these complex geopolitical developments.
