Calls for Government Action Mark World Press Freedom Day in Nigeria
Media rights organizations and international bodies have urged the Nigerian government to create a safer environment for journalists as the world commemorates World Press Freedom Day under the theme “Shaping a future at peace.”
Media Rights Agenda (MRA) painted a troubling picture of press freedom in Nigeria, describing it as “deeply concerning” with escalating attacks against journalists and media organizations. Ayomide Eweje, MRA’s programme officer, highlighted a disturbing pattern of intimidation, harassment, and arbitrary arrests of journalists by security agencies and other state actors over the past year.
Eweje called on the Federal Government to comply with a February 16, 2024 Federal High Court judgment that directed authorities to investigate, prosecute, and punish perpetrators of attacks against journalists while implementing measures to prevent future incidents. She emphasized that the government’s failure to adhere to these court orders more than two years after they were issued has created an atmosphere of impunity that encourages further attacks.
“The misuse of laws and regulations to stifle dissent remains a major challenge in the country,” Eweje noted. She pointed to the Cybercrime Act and other legislation that have been deployed against journalists, bloggers, and media platforms under the pretext of maintaining national security, preserving public order, or protecting the reputations of public officials and powerful individuals in society.
Habeeb Adisa, co-editor of Fact Check Africa, echoed these concerns, stressing that a free and safe media environment is essential for accountability, countering falsehoods, and ensuring citizens’ access to accurate information. The organization expressed solidarity with media professionals facing intimidation, censorship, and threats while paying tribute to journalists who have lost their lives pursuing truth.
“Government and stakeholders must actively shape a future of peace by protecting press freedom as a foundation for human rights, development and security,” Adisa stated. He emphasized that safeguarding press freedom is crucial to building transparent, accountable, and peaceful societies.
As an organization dedicated to promoting information integrity and combating misinformation, Fact Check Africa recognizes press freedom as fundamental to the work of both fact-checkers and journalists, according to Adisa.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) also weighed in on the significance of World Press Freedom Day, noting that May 3 “acts as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and is also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics.”
UNESCO further emphasized that the day serves to support media outlets that face restrictions or threats to press freedom while commemorating journalists who have sacrificed their lives in pursuit of stories.
The global focus on press freedom comes at a critical time for Nigeria, where journalists continue to operate in increasingly hostile conditions despite constitutional guarantees of press freedom. Media watchdogs have documented numerous cases of harassment, arbitrary detention, and physical attacks against reporters covering sensitive issues such as corruption, security operations, and political protests.
