In a controversial move that has drawn significant backlash, President Donald Trump attributed the deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner to “Trump Derangement Syndrome” in a recent Truth Social post.

The post, which has been verified as authentic, was made by Trump shortly after news broke of the couple’s deaths in what authorities have described as an apparent stabbing at their Los Angeles home on December 14, 2025.

In his message, Trump wrote: “A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.”

The president continued by claiming Reiner “was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump,” before concluding with: “May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

Law enforcement officials have since reported that the Reiners’ deaths are being investigated as homicides. According to The Associated Press, their 32-year-old son Nick Reiner was arrested in connection with the deaths. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department records indicate Nick Reiner was booked on a felony charge with bail set at $4 million.

The president’s remarks come at a time when political polarization in America remains at historic levels. The term “Trump Derangement Syndrome” has been frequently employed by Trump and his supporters to characterize critics of his administration and policies.

Rob Reiner, 78, had been an outspoken critic of Trump throughout both of his administrations. Just months before his death, Reiner had publicly warned that the country faced the prospect of entering “full-on autocracy” under Trump’s leadership, according to media reports.

The celebrated director leaves behind an impressive legacy in film and television. He first rose to fame as an actor portraying “Meathead” on the groundbreaking sitcom “All in the Family” before establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s most successful directors with classics including “Stand by Me,” “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally,” “Misery,” and “A Few Good Men.”

Michele Reiner, 68, worked as a film producer and collaborated with her husband on multiple projects throughout their careers.

The White House has not responded to requests for additional comment on Trump’s post, including whether the president’s official position is that the Reiners died because of what he terms “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

The tragedy has sparked renewed debate about the consequences of inflammatory political rhetoric in an already divided nation. Media commentators from across the political spectrum have weighed in, with some defending the president’s right to express his opinions while others have criticized the timing and nature of his comments about the recently deceased couple.

As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths continue, the president’s remarks have added a contentious political dimension to what law enforcement is treating as a domestic homicide case. The Reiner family has not yet issued any public response to Trump’s characterization of the tragedy.
