Trump’s “Death” Remarks Spark Political Firestorm as Democrats Call for Condemnation

President Donald Trump ignited intense controversy on November 20, 2025, after posting messages on Truth Social that appeared to suggest Democratic lawmakers who criticized him had committed offenses “punishable by DEATH.”

In a post that quickly spread across social media platforms, Trump wrote in all capital letters: “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!” While this specific post didn’t directly name Democratic lawmakers, it followed another message posted approximately one hour earlier that provided crucial context.

In that preceding post, Trump wrote: “This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???”

The president’s inflammatory rhetoric targeted six Democratic members of Congress who had released a video on November 18 addressing U.S. service members. In the recording, Representatives Jason Crow (CO), Chris Deluzio (PA), Maggie Goodlander (NH), Chrissy Houlahan (PA), and Senators Mark Kelly (AZ) and Elissa Slotkin (MI) urged military personnel to “refuse illegal orders.”

“No one has to carry out orders that violate the law or our Constitution,” the lawmakers stated in the video, which concluded with the Navy’s historic rallying cry, “Don’t give up the ship.”

Trump’s reaction escalated throughout the day. Before the “punishable by DEATH” post, he had already called the lawmakers “traitors to the country” and insisted they “be arrested and put on trial.” The president also reshared multiple posts, including one that read: “HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the president during a tense news conference, attempting to shift focus to the lawmakers’ video. “Let’s be clear about what the president is responding to,” Leavitt said. “You have sitting members of the United States Congress who conspired together to orchestrate a video message to members of the United States military… encouraging them to defy the president’s lawful orders.”

When pressed about whether Trump was encouraging violence against members of Congress, Leavitt insisted reporters were missing the point. “Why aren’t you talking about what these members of Congress are doing to encourage and incite violence? They are literally saying to 1.3 million active-duty service members to defy the chain of command.”

A reporter pointed out that the lawmakers specifically referred to “illegal orders,” to which Leavitt responded that they were “suggesting that the president has given illegal orders, which he has not.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson characterized the Democrats’ statements as “wildly inappropriate” but did not directly address Trump’s rhetoric.

The six lawmakers targeted by Trump released a joint statement through Senator Slotkin, making it clear they would not be intimidated. “We are veterans and national security professionals who love this country and swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred obligation.”

Their statement continued: “What’s most telling is that the President considers it punishable by death for us to restate the law… Every American must unite and condemn the President’s calls for our murder and political violence. This is a time for moral clarity.”

House Democratic leadership, led by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Minority Whip Katherine Clark, and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, issued a forceful condemnation of what they termed Trump’s “disgusting and dangerous death threats.” The leadership statement revealed they had contacted the House Sergeant at Arms and United States Capitol Police to ensure the targeted lawmakers’ safety.

“Donald Trump must immediately delete these unhinged social media posts and recant his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed,” the Democratic leaders urged.

The incident represents one of the most explicit examples of heated rhetoric from the president directed at political opponents during his second term. Legal experts note that whether Trump’s posts constitute criminal threats would ultimately be determined by law enforcement and the courts.
