Trump’s Rhetoric and Policy Changes Dominated 2024’s Political Misinformation

President Donald Trump’s return to the White House in 2025 has been marked by a wave of false and misleading claims that shaped policy decisions and public discourse throughout 2024, according to fact-checkers and policy experts.

The administration’s pattern of using inaccurate statements to justify major policy changes became evident early in Trump’s second term. His “reciprocal tariffs” policy, for instance, was based on calculations economists widely rejected as illegitimate. When announcing the tariffs in the Rose Garden, Trump displayed a chart that purported to show other countries’ tariff rates but actually reflected the administration’s own trade balance calculations.

Perhaps most contentious was Trump’s firing of Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer after disappointing job reports. Trump claimed the numbers were “wrong,” “phony” and “rigged” without providing evidence. William Beach, who served as BLS commissioner during Trump’s first term, called the firing “totally groundless” and warned it “sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the statistical mission of the Bureau.”

The administration’s foreign aid policies came under scrutiny when Trump claimed $50 million was being sent to Gaza “to buy condoms for Hamas.” The contractor identified by the State Department refuted this assertion, stating it provides hospital services in Gaza and has not used U.S. funds “to procure or distribute condoms.”

Health policy became a particular flashpoint under Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has long been associated with vaccine skepticism. In September, what Trump promised would be “one of the biggest medical announcements in the history of our country” turned out to be unproven claims about Tylenol (acetaminophen) causing autism when taken during pregnancy.

Medical experts noted that while some studies have shown an association between prenatal acetaminophen use and autism, no causal link has been established, and recent research suggests there likely isn’t a connection. Medical organizations continue to recommend prudent use of the drug during pregnancy, as untreated pain or fever can harm both mother and child.

Kennedy’s influence extended to other health policies. Under his leadership, HHS terminated half a billion dollars of funding for mRNA vaccine projects, falsely claiming “the data show these vaccines fail to protect effectively against upper respiratory infections like COVID and flu.” This statement contradicts peer-reviewed scientific literature demonstrating the vaccines’ effectiveness and safety.

In March, during a measles outbreak in Texas that ultimately killed two children, Kennedy promoted unproven treatments, claiming there were “very good results” from treating patients with certain steroids, antibiotics, and cod liver oil. Medical experts contradicted these claims, noting that none of these are recommended treatments for measles.

The administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), initially led by entrepreneur Elon Musk, has also made dubious claims. Despite promising to cut “at least $2 trillion” in wasteful spending, Trump’s claim that DOGE had “found hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud” was significantly inflated compared to the department’s own reported figures.

National security issues weren’t immune to mischaracterization. Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard claimed a Washington Post report on Venezuelan migration had “twisted and manipulated” classified intelligence. However, when the redacted intelligence memo was released, it corroborated the Post’s account that the Venezuelan government was not directing the migration of gang members to the U.S.

Trump also repeatedly misrepresented the origins of Russia’s war in Ukraine, falsely stating that Ukraine “should have never started it” when Russia was clearly the aggressor with its February 2022 invasion. Throughout the year, he incorrectly claimed the U.S. has provided more aid to Ukraine than Europe has, when the opposite is true.

The deployment of National Guard troops to various cities has been justified with exaggerated crime statistics. In Portland, Trump claimed the city “is burning to the ground” despite local fire and police departments reporting minimal incidents. In Washington, D.C., he wrongly stated that “murders in 2023 reached the highest rate probably ever,” when the rate was actually less than half that of 1991.

As the administration prepares for its first full year in office, fact-checkers warn that the pattern of using misleading claims to justify policy changes appears to be intensifying rather than abating, raising concerns about the impact on public trust in government institutions.
