In a rising tide of misinformation surrounding Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala’s recent achievements, false claims about a presidential award have begun circulating on social media, highlighting the ongoing challenge of verifying information in the digital age.

A Facebook post from the page “Tennis Together,” which has approximately 25,000 followers, incorrectly claimed that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had bestowed a “Special Presidential Award” upon Eala after she reached her career-high world ranking of No. 54. The post, which garnered over 500 reactions, claimed that Marcos personally honored Eala “with a Special Presidential Award, recognizing her as a symbol of excellence, perseverance, and national pride.”

The fabricated post even included a purported quote from Marcos, encouraging Eala to “keep lifting the flag higher” as she continues her professional tennis journey.

However, no such ceremony took place, and the “Special Presidential Award” mentioned in the post does not exist within the Philippine government’s official recognition system. While President Marcos has congratulated Eala on social media for her tennis accomplishments, his most recent acknowledgment came on September 7, when he celebrated her first World Tennis Association (WTA) 125 singles title.

The Philippine government does recognize outstanding athletic achievements through the Presidential Medal of Merit, which is awarded to individuals who bring honor to the country. Recent recipients include gymnastics star Carlos Yulo, who earned two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, as well as bowling legend Paeng Nepomuceno and weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz.

The misleading post may have confused the non-existent presidential award with the 2022 President’s Award from the San Miguel Corporation-Philippine Sportswriters Association, which Eala did receive following her US Open juniors girls’ singles championship.

This incident marks the latest in a series of false claims circulating about Eala, whose rising prominence in international tennis has made her a target for misinformation. Fact-checking organizations have previously debunked similar fabricated stories about the young athlete.

Eala’s legitimate accomplishments stand on their own merit. On October 6, the 20-year-old reached her career-high ranking at World No. 54, inching closer to breaking into the top 50 players globally. This achievement represents the highest ranking ever attained by a Filipino tennis player in WTA history, cementing her place as a trailblazer for Philippine sports.

Despite her recent success, Eala faced a setback at the World Tennis Association 250 Japan Open, where she was defeated by 18-year-old Czech player Tereza Valentova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. This marked Eala’s most significant loss in five months.

Looking ahead, Eala is preparing for a return to competition in China, where she will participate in the Guangzhou Open from October 20 to 27, followed by the Hong Kong Open from October 27 to November 2.

The proliferation of false information surrounding Eala underscores the importance of critical media literacy and fact-checking in the social media era. As athletes like Eala continue to break barriers and inspire nations, ensuring accurate reporting of their achievements remains essential to preserving the integrity of their accomplishments and public discourse.
