Cruz Criticizes CNN’s Afghan Refugee Vetting Fact-Check Following National Guard Shooting

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas has spoken out against a 2021 CNN fact-check that dismissed concerns about inadequate vetting of Afghan refugees, following an incident where a former Afghan evacuee allegedly shot two West Virginia National Guard members, killing one.

The incident has reignited debate over the Biden administration’s handling of the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal and subsequent refugee resettlement program known as Operation Allies Welcome.

“As we’ve seen over and over, Democrats, journalists, and self-declared experts work together to push false narratives that promote their shared ideology,” Cruz told Fox News Digital. “In 2021, they created false narratives to cover for the Biden administration’s catastrophic withdrawal from Afghanistan, including the admission of an almost uncountable number of evacuees into the United States.”

Cruz’s criticism centers on statements he made in 2021 when he expressed concern that the Biden administration was “bringing tens of thousands of refugees into the United States without thoroughly vetting them,” warning it could amount to “an invitation to terrorist attacks here in the United States.”

At that time, CNN published a fact-check labeling such claims “misleading,” asserting that Afghan refugees were being properly screened. The CNN piece stated: “Intelligence, law enforcement, and counterterrorism professionals are conducting security screenings for all Afghans permitted to enter the US. And according to officials and experts, evacuated Afghans are being vetted sometimes more than once.”

The senator now claims his concerns have been validated. “At the time, I said they weren’t adequately vetting those evacuees and that they were facilitating child trafficking and inviting terrorism. Instead of addressing those concerns, Biden officials ran to CNN and other journalists to attack me,” Cruz said. “Americans have been and continue to be at risk because of those policies and the cover-up used to justify them.”

Beyond the recent shooting incident, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reportedly conducted operations targeting Afghan evacuees with criminal backgrounds. According to Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, these operations have identified individuals with convictions for sexual battery, lewd acts with minors, and arrests for alleged child abuse and terror-group support.

“Under Secretary Noem, DHS has been going full throttle on identifying and arresting known or suspected terrorists and criminal illegal aliens that came in through Biden’s fraudulent parole programs,” McLaughlin stated. “When Joe Biden let 190,000 Afghan nationals in, they didn’t do criminal background checks, vet social media, someone just vouched for them, and they took the words as truth.”

The refugee vetting controversy has become further politicized in the current election season. When questioned by a CBS reporter about his criticism of the Biden administration’s vetting process, former President Donald Trump responded angrily, dismissing the reporter’s reference to a Department of Justice Inspector General report that supposedly confirmed thorough vetting by DHS and the FBI.

The Operation Allies Welcome program facilitated the evacuation of tens of thousands of Afghans following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021. The chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan marked one of the Biden administration’s most criticized foreign policy moments, with the subsequent refugee program now facing renewed scrutiny.

CNN has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding their 2021 fact-check in light of recent events.

The incident raises broader questions about the balance between humanitarian obligations during crisis evacuations and national security concerns, as well as the challenges of conducting thorough background checks on individuals fleeing conflict zones with limited documentation or verification resources.
