Hero Identified as Ahmed Al Ahmed in Sydney Hanukkah Attack, Disproving False Claims

A man who courageously disarmed a gunman during a deadly attack at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney has been officially identified as Ahmed Al Ahmed, contradicting viral social media claims that misidentified him as Edward Crabtree.

The attack, which occurred on December 14, 2025, at Bondi Beach, resulted in the deaths of 15 people and injured 40 others when two gunmen opened fire on the crowd gathered for the Jewish holiday celebration.

Multiple credible news organizations, including Al Jazeera, NBC News, and The Guardian, have confirmed Ahmed Al Ahmed’s identity. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese personally visited Ahmed in the hospital where he is recovering from a gunshot wound sustained during his heroic intervention, and publicly acknowledged his actions.

The false identification spread after Facebook user Gurnam Singh, who has over 51,000 followers, shared screenshots from video footage of the incident with a caption claiming the hero was “Edward Crabtree, not Ahmed Al Ahmed.” The post further alleged that “leftists” had deliberately misattributed the heroic act to someone with a Muslim name “to defend the terrorists’ religion” and prevent Australian citizens from becoming angry.

The attackers have been identified by authorities as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram. The elder Akram was killed during the police response, while his son remains in serious condition under police custody in a hospital.

The attack represents one of Australia’s most serious terrorist incidents in recent years, targeting a celebration of Hanukkah, an important Jewish festival. Among the 15 victims were both children and elderly attendees.
