False Claims About Kennedy’s Green New Deal Confrontation Spread Online

A fabricated story claiming that Senator John Kennedy, R-La., publicly confronted Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer over a “$93 trillion Green New Deal 2.0” has been circulating widely across social media platforms, despite having no basis in reality.

The false narrative, which began spreading in November 2023, described a dramatic confrontation supposedly broadcast on C-SPAN where Kennedy allegedly exposed financial improprieties of Democratic leaders during a Senate floor debate. The viral post claimed the Louisiana senator interrupted Ocasio-Cortez mid-speech, presenting a folder labeled “DEM RECEIPTS – DO NOT BEND” containing damaging financial information about the New York representative and other Democrats.

Fact-checkers have confirmed no such exchange ever took place. The story contains numerous implausible elements, including the presence of Ocasio-Cortez—a House representative—speaking on the Senate floor, which violates congressional protocols. The post also claimed the incident received “28 million concurrent viewers” and that “#KennedyMassplode trended #1 worldwide for 36 straight hours”—assertions with no supporting evidence.

The fabricated content made several unsubstantiated claims about Ocasio-Cortez, including that her net worth jumped from $29,000 to $12.4 million between 2020-2025 and that she received “$4.7 million in dark money” despite promising not to accept corporate PAC contributions. Previous fact-checks have debunked similar claims about Ocasio-Cortez becoming a multimillionaire after entering Congress.

The false story also contained misinformation about Chuck Schumer, incorrectly stating he lives in an “$8.2 million Park Slope brownstone.” In reality, Schumer purchased his Brooklyn apartment in the early 1980s for approximately $157,000, according to reports from The New York Times and Observer.com.

Another fabrication involved Schumer’s wife, Iris Weinshall, who serves as chief operating officer and treasurer for The New York Public Library. The post falsely claimed she has a “$47 million net worth from Goldman Sachs board seat,” though no evidence exists that she ever worked for the investment bank.

Digital analysis suggests the content was likely created using artificial intelligence tools. When submitted to AI-detection software, results varied—Copyleaks identified it as 100% AI-generated, while ZeroGPT registered only a 1.88% match, highlighting the limitations of current detection technologies.

The original post appeared on a Facebook page called “Kienen-Patricia-Natasja,” which listed at least one page manager located in Vietnam according to the platform’s transparency data. Similar false stories have been traced to Vietnam-based Facebook operations that generate fabricated, AI-created content about celebrities, politics, and disasters.

Multiple iterations of the same false story appeared across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Truth Social, and X (formerly Twitter), as well as on several blogs. Many of these pages share characteristics common to coordinated inauthentic networks, including multiple page managers based in Vietnam and links to advertisement-heavy blog sites.

This incident represents a growing trend of AI-generated political misinformation designed to inflame partisan tensions and generate engagement on social media platforms. The fabricated confrontation plays into existing political divisions by portraying a Republican senator dramatically exposing alleged hypocrisy among progressive Democrats.

Fact-checkers continue to monitor the spread of this and similar false claims as the 2024 election cycle intensifies, with particular attention to the increasingly sophisticated use of AI to create convincing but entirely fictional political narratives.
