In a clarification issued yesterday, multiple memorials honoring the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos killed during the 2015 Mamasapano clash have been identified across the Philippines, directly contradicting viral social media claims that no such tributes exist.
The false assertion, which appeared in a December 12 Facebook post by the page “Cent SB,” claimed that “SAF 44 has no museum, but addicts, rapists, and criminals have one? Lol.” The post quickly gained traction, accumulating approximately 19,000 reactions, 1,800 comments, and 5,900 shares as of reporting time.
Fact-checkers have identified several prominent memorials dedicated to the fallen SAF commandos, most notably the Special Action Force Museum, SAF 44 Memorial, and Black Beret Monument located in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig. This facility directly refutes the Facebook claim as it explicitly includes a museum component honoring the fallen officers.
Additional memorials include the SAF 44 Forest Park within the National Police College campus at Camp Gen Mariano N. Castañeda in Silang, Cavite; a dedicated memorial at Ifugao Park in Camp John Hay, Baguio City; and a monument at Lepanto National High School in Mankayan, Benguet, which specifically honors three graduates who were among the SAF 44.
The Mamasapano clash, one of the most tragic incidents in recent Philippine law enforcement history, occurred on January 25, 2015, during a police operation codenamed “Oplan Exodus.” What began as a mission to capture high-value bomb makers in Maguindanao escalated into a deadly firefight between SAF commandos and armed groups, resulting in the death of 44 police officers.
Although the misleading Facebook post didn’t specifically identify which museum it referenced regarding “addicts, rapists, and criminals,” analysts believe it likely referred to the recently launched Lakbay Museo ng Paghilom. This mobile museum, which was officially unveiled at the House of Representatives on December 9 and remained open to the public until December 11, documents stories of victims of extrajudicial killings during former President Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial war on drugs campaign.
The museum features printed information about the drug war and its victims, along with a reproduction of the painting “Paghilom” and a shirt belonging to a three-year-old victim of the anti-drug operations. Notable attendees at its launch included Akbayan Representative Chel Diokno and Tingog Representative Jude Acidre.
Misinformation surrounding both the SAF 44 incident and the Duterte administration’s drug war has been persistent in Philippine social media. Proponents of the drug war have frequently characterized its victims as criminals or potential criminals, a narrative that has been challenged by human rights organizations and independent investigations.
The spread of this false claim comes at a sensitive time, as former President Duterte currently faces three counts of murder as a crime against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands, in connection with his administration’s drug war tactics.
Fact-checking organizations continue to monitor and address the surge of misinformation regarding these politically charged issues, emphasizing the importance of accuracy in public discourse about significant historical events and ongoing legal proceedings.
