Viral Video of Woman Calling Police on Boston Police Chief Proven to be AI-Generated Fabrication

A widely circulated social media video claiming to show a white woman calling the police on her Black neighbor—who supposedly turned out to be Boston’s chief of police—has been confirmed as a sophisticated fake created with artificial intelligence technology.

The video, which appeared on Instagram, TikTok, and Threads in November 2023, was designed to mimic a legitimate news broadcast, complete with security footage and narration describing the alleged confrontation. In the fabricated scenario, a woman was shown confronting a Black man in an apartment hallway before calling authorities, only to discover she had reported Boston’s police chief.

Multiple fact-checking organizations investigated the clip after receiving inquiries from concerned viewers. Their analysis revealed several telltale signs of AI generation, including visual inconsistencies and unnatural narration patterns typical of artificially created content.

Visual anomalies appeared throughout the supposed security footage, with experts noting that the Black man’s ear inexplicably disappeared into his head at one point—a common perspective error in AI-generated imagery. Additionally, the hallway rug appeared to blend unnaturally with a partially opened door, another indicator of artificial rendering.

The audio narration contained equally revealing flaws. The voiceover exhibited unnatural pauses and peculiar speech patterns that deviated from typical human delivery. One particularly noticeable error occurred when the narrator stated the police chief “had moved into Apartment 412 days earlier.” The AI voice interpreted this as “apartment four hundred twelve days earlier” rather than the natural human pronunciation of “apartment four-twelve,” suggesting the resident had lived there for over a year.

Language choices in the narration also raised red flags. The script described the police chief as having “replied calmly” to accusations—phrasing that professional journalists typically avoid. News reporting standards generally limit attribution to neutral terms like “said” and discourage adverbs that might suggest bias or interpretation of events.

Factual inaccuracies provided the most definitive evidence of fabrication. The video identified Boston’s police chief as “Marcus Thompson,” but Michael Cox has held that position since October 2022. Furthermore, the supposed “Glendale Arms” apartment complex where the incident allegedly occurred does not exist in Boston—the only property with that name is located approximately 300 miles away in Philadelphia.

Despite appearing to be from a legitimate news broadcast, no reputable media organization has reported on such an incident. The video joins a growing trend of increasingly sophisticated AI-generated content designed to mimic authentic news reports while spreading misinformation.

Media literacy experts have expressed concern about the rising sophistication of AI-generated fake news. Unlike earlier, more obvious manipulations, these newer fabrications incorporate realistic visuals, plausible scenarios, and narration styles that closely mimic legitimate journalism.

“These AI-generated videos represent a concerning evolution in misinformation,” said Dr. Samantha Wilson, a digital media researcher at Northwestern University. “They’re specifically designed to trigger emotional responses around sensitive topics like racial profiling, potentially inflaming tensions with completely manufactured scenarios.”

This incident parallels other recent AI fabrications that have been debunked, including fake videos purporting to show a sanitation worker rescuing an abandoned baby and a Russian man in a boat saving a bear cub.

Social media platforms continue to grapple with the challenges of identifying and labeling such content, as AI generation technology rapidly advances in sophistication, making detection increasingly difficult for both automated systems and human moderators.
