Indian Government Refutes False Fuel Price Hike Claims Circulating Online
The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit has officially debunked viral social media messages claiming that petrol and diesel prices have been increased by up to Rs 12.50 per litre. On Wednesday, the PIB clarified that no such directive has been issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
“An order circulating on social media claiming fuel price hikes is fake. The Government of India has not issued any such order,” the PIB Fact Check announced in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter). The agency urged citizens to verify information through official channels and refrain from sharing unsubstantiated claims.
The government intervention comes in response to widespread circulation of a fabricated government notification suggesting a substantial increase in fuel prices across various social media platforms. The fake notification had caused concern among consumers already anxious about potential price hikes.
Just a day earlier, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, addressed these concerns during an inter-ministerial briefing in New Delhi. She confirmed that there is currently no proposal to increase retail fuel prices, attempting to alleviate worries amid escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia that have been affecting global energy markets.
“LPG, petroleum and diesel are available in sufficient amounts, and the prices have not increased, so please do not panic,” Sharma stated during the briefing. She emphasized that the government has ensured complete supply security for domestic LPG and PNG (Piped Natural Gas) consumers, as well as for CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) used in transportation.
The government’s assurances come at a particularly sensitive time for global oil markets, which have been experiencing volatility due to the ongoing conflicts in West Asia—a region critical to global oil production and supply chains. The situation has raised concerns about potential disruptions to oil supplies and their impact on domestic fuel prices in India, which imports approximately 85% of its crude oil requirements.
Fuel price stability is a politically sensitive issue in India, affecting everything from household budgets to inflation rates. Even small changes in petrol and diesel prices can have cascading effects across the economy, particularly impacting transportation costs and subsequently the prices of essential commodities.
The Indian government has been monitoring the global situation closely while maintaining price stability. Oil marketing companies (OMCs) like Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum have kept retail prices largely unchanged despite fluctuations in international crude oil prices over recent months.
Experts suggest that this price stability has been maintained partly due to government intervention and partly because the OMCs are absorbing some of the cost variations rather than passing them on to consumers.
The PIB Fact Check unit, established to counter misinformation related to government policies and announcements, has become increasingly active in recent years as social media platforms have become breeding grounds for fake news and misleading information.
This incident underscores the importance of verifying information through official channels, especially when it concerns essential commodities and services that affect daily life and economic activities across the country.
