The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check wing issued a clarification Sunday, labeling widely circulated reports of severe coal shortages and grid instability as “misleading” and designed to “create unnecessary panic” among the public.

The government response came after a viral post on X (formerly Twitter) claimed India’s power grid had reached a record demand of 277 gigawatts (GW), alleging critical coal shortages at thermal power plants and resulting load-shedding across multiple states. The post further suggested the grid faced significant stress during evening hours when solar power generation typically drops.

Official data paints a markedly different picture. According to PIB Fact Check, the maximum power demand recorded on May 2 was actually 229 GW—substantially lower than claimed—and this demand “was met completely” without any shortfalls or disruptions to consumers.

“The total coal stock with Thermal Power Plants currently stands at 53.702 million tonnes, which is sufficient to meet requirements,” the fact-checking body stated, addressing concerns about fuel availability at generating stations. This substantial reserve indicates India’s power sector is well-prepared to handle current demand patterns.
