Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has become the center of widespread misinformation following his detention at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in March 2025, with the latest fabrication claiming U.S. President Donald Trump had pledged to secure his release.

A viral quote card circulating on Facebook falsely attributes statements to Trump expressing solidarity with Duterte and promising diplomatic intervention. The fabricated quote reads: “If there’s one thing I believe in, it’s standing by allies. President Duterte led his country his way, and I respect that. I will use every diplomatic channel available to help ensure that FPRRD is treated fairly and to push for his release from the ICC. Strong leaders deserve strong support.”

This claim has gained significant traction online, with one version posted by Facebook user Macoy Mangilit generating over 99,000 interactions, 7,500 comments, and 2,700 shares since January 5. Another Facebook account, “Bisayang Dako,” amplified the misinformation through a commentary reel claiming the quote was “100% legit,” attracting more than 216,000 views.

However, no evidence exists that Trump made such statements. The supposed quote does not appear on Trump’s verified social media accounts, official White House records, or in any legitimate news reports from major U.S. or Philippine media outlets.

The claim’s implausibility is further highlighted by the geopolitical reality that the United States is not a member of the ICC and holds no formal authority to intervene in the court’s proceedings. The U.S. withdrew from the Rome Statute, which established the ICC, and has maintained a complex relationship with the international tribunal over jurisdictional concerns.

Duterte’s detention has triggered a wave of similar fabricated statements of support allegedly from international figures. Fact-checking organizations across the Philippines and internationally have repeatedly debunked such false claims, which appear designed to create an impression of global opposition to Duterte’s prosecution.

The former Philippine president faces charges of crimes against humanity related to his controversial “war on drugs” campaign during his presidency from 2016 to 2022. Human rights organizations have documented thousands of extrajudicial killings during this period, allegations that Duterte has consistently denied.

This fabricated Trump quote represents a concerning pattern of disinformation surrounding high-profile international criminal cases. Social media platforms continue to struggle with containing the spread of such false information, which can distort public understanding of complex international legal processes.

Media literacy experts emphasize the importance of verifying information from official sources and recognized news organizations, particularly when claims involve international relations or legal proceedings. The ongoing circulation of these fabricated statements highlights the challenges facing both platforms and users in navigating an increasingly complex information landscape.

As Duterte’s case proceeds at the ICC, the international community continues to monitor developments closely, with legitimate discussions about jurisdiction, diplomatic relations, and human rights accountability taking place across formal channels.
