The Indian government’s Press Information Bureau (PIB) has officially dismissed viral social media claims regarding an alleged increase in fuel prices, confirming no such order has been issued by authorities.

On Wednesday, the PIB Fact Check unit addressed widespread rumors circulating online that suggested petrol and diesel prices had been hiked by up to Rs 12.50 per litre. The fact-checking body categorically stated that the purported government notification being shared across social media platforms was fraudulent.

“An order circulating on social media claiming fuel price hikes is fake. The Government of India has not issued any such order,” the PIB Fact Check unit clarified in an official statement on its X (formerly Twitter) platform. The agency urged citizens to verify information through official channels and refrain from sharing unverified claims that could potentially cause public alarm.

The fabricated notification had gained significant traction online, prompting the government to issue the clarification amid growing consumer concerns about potential price increases at the pump.

This official denial aligns with statements made Tuesday by Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, who confirmed during an inter-ministerial briefing that no proposals to increase retail fuel prices were currently under consideration.

“LPG, petroleum and diesel are available in sufficient amounts, and the prices have not increased, so please do not panic,” Sharma stated, addressing public concerns about potential supply disruptions or price volatility. She emphasized that the government has ensured 100 percent supply for domestic LPG and PNG consumers, as well as CNG used in transportation sectors.

The reassurances from both the PIB and petroleum ministry officials come at a particularly sensitive time, as global energy markets face ongoing volatility due to escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia—a region critical to global oil production and supply chains. These tensions have created uncertainty in international markets, with potential implications for oil-importing nations like India, which relies heavily on imported crude.

India, which imports approximately 85 percent of its crude oil requirements, remains especially vulnerable to international price fluctuations and supply disruptions. In recent years, the government has worked to diversify its oil import sources while developing strategic petroleum reserves to mitigate potential supply shocks.

Fuel prices remain a politically sensitive issue in India, with even minor adjustments often triggering public debate and economic ripple effects across various sectors. The government has historically maintained close oversight of the retail fuel market, balancing consumer interests with fiscal considerations.

Energy analysts note that while current retail prices remain stable, the situation bears monitoring as global crude oil benchmarks continue to respond to geopolitical developments. Any sustained increase in international crude prices could eventually create pressure on India’s fuel pricing mechanisms.

The PIB Fact Check unit, established to combat misinformation, has been increasingly active in addressing viral falsehoods on critical economic and policy matters. Officials have emphasized the importance of relying on verified information, particularly regarding essential commodities that affect daily consumer spending and broader economic activity.

Consumers are advised to consult official government sources or authorized fuel retailers for accurate information regarding fuel prices and availability.
