Viral Video Falsely Links Academic to Pakistan’s Former Spy Chief

A viral social media video claiming to show the wife of Pakistan’s former intelligence chief Faiz Hameed has been debunked as a case of mistaken identity, fueling concerns about misinformation in Pakistan’s already tense political climate.

The video, which garnered over 591,000 views and 6,000 shares on TikTok alone, featured a woman allegedly holding a press conference claiming her husband was being pressured to provide testimony against former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The post carried an overlay text stating: “My husband is under pressure to give a statement against Imran Khan.”

However, fact-checking efforts have confirmed the woman in the video is not related to Hameed, Pakistan’s former chief of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency who was recently sentenced to 14 years in prison by a military court.

The woman has been identified as Faiza Shakil, an academic and activist from Quetta. On December 13, Shakil held a press conference at the Quetta Press Club specifically to address the false claims circulating online about her identity.

“I am not Faiz Hameed’s wife,” Shakil clarified during the press conference. She stated that her husband’s name is Muhammad Asif Ahmed, an employee of the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), and that they have been married for 22 years. Shakil emphasized that she has no connection whatsoever to Hameed or any military officials.

The misidentification has caused significant distress to Shakil and her family. “This misinformation has harmed my family,” she said, describing the viral posts as “extreme and entirely baseless.” She has reportedly filed a complaint with Pakistan’s National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) regarding the false claims.

Further investigation revealed that the original footage came from an August 26 press conference where Shakil discussed her professional career at Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s University in Quetta and challenges she faced. At no point during this press conference did she mention Hameed or make any statements about political pressure.

The spread of this misinformation comes at a particularly sensitive time in Pakistani politics. Hameed, once a powerful figure in Pakistan’s military establishment, was court-martialed earlier this month amid ongoing political turmoil in the country.

The case highlights the growing problem of misinformation on social media platforms in Pakistan, where political tensions between supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the military establishment continue to simmer. False information can spread rapidly across platforms including TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, often gaining traction before fact-checkers can intervene.

Media experts note that the incident demonstrates how easily manipulated content can exploit existing political divisions. “Social media users should exercise caution when encountering sensational political claims, especially those involving high-profile figures,” said one digital media analyst who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the topic.

The Pakistani military, which wields significant influence in the country, has been increasingly scrutinized for its role in politics, particularly following Khan’s removal from office in 2022. Relations between Khan and the military establishment, once allies, have deteriorated significantly.

As Pakistan continues to navigate political uncertainty, the incident serves as a reminder of how digital misinformation can further complicate an already complex political landscape and potentially harm innocent individuals caught in the crossfire.
