Officials Debunk False Claims of Ombudsman Remulla’s Death

Philippine Ombudsman Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla has refuted widespread social media rumors claiming he was hospitalized and later died, appearing live on DZRH News radio on January 3 to dispel the misinformation personally.

The false claims gained significant traction on Facebook, with one post garnering over 15,000 reactions, 5,100 comments, and 822 shares. The viral post cryptically stated, “News: Boying is reportedly rushed to the hospital. Is Romy calling for him?” – referencing the late Antipolo congressman Romeo Acop, who died in December 2025.

The fabricated news spread across multiple platforms including X (formerly Twitter), Threads, and YouTube, with various iterations using manipulated or AI-generated images purportedly showing Remulla in a hospital bed. AI detection tool SightEngine confirmed one widely-shared hospital photo was 99% likely computer-generated.

During his radio appearance, Remulla addressed the situation directly while hosts emphasized he was physically present in their studio. The discussion turned to broader concerns about organized disinformation campaigns in the Philippines.

“Troll armies should be illegal,” Remulla stated firmly during the broadcast. “There has to be something severe done to people who do that… who take on other identities in the cyberworld.”

Multiple official sources confirmed Remulla’s good health. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, the Ombudsman’s brother, told Inquirer.net on January 2 that his brother had been playing golf earlier that morning. The same day, Assistant Ombudsman and spokesperson Mico Clavano verified to several news outlets that Remulla was well.

The rumors may have gained traction due to Remulla’s previous health challenges. In 2024, while serving as justice secretary, he experienced complications that limited his physical presence at the Department of Justice for several months. He had undergone quintuple bypass heart surgery in 2023 and later revealed a leukemia diagnosis following the procedure.

However, Remulla has been cancer-free since before his appointment as Ombudsman in October 2025. The Office of the Ombudsman previously issued a statement confirming his good health, noting he “enjoys good health and continues to perform his duties with vigor and dedication. He has been cancer-free for a year and a half and exercises every morning before going to the office to maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

This incident highlights the growing challenge of health-related misinformation targeting public officials in the Philippines. Fact-checking organizations have repeatedly debunked similar false claims about politicians’ deaths or illnesses, pointing to a troubling pattern of health misinformation campaigns on social media platforms.

The rapid spread of these fabricated stories underscores the critical importance of media literacy and verification of sources, particularly when encountering sensational claims about public figures. Digital manipulation tools, including AI image generators, have made it increasingly difficult for casual users to distinguish authentic content from sophisticated fakes.

Government agencies continue to encourage the public to report suspicious posts and verify information through official channels before sharing unconfirmed reports.
