Neighbors and officials have confirmed the identity of Md. Kabir Hossain as a legitimate farmer after controversy erupted on social media following his receipt of a government-issued farmer’s card from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The confusion began when viral images showing Hossain in stylish outfits at various international locations circulated online after the April 14 ceremony at Shaheed Maruf Stadium in Tangail. Fact-checking platform Rumor Scanner has since verified that these widely-shared photographs were generated using artificial intelligence.

“Kabir Hossain is really a farmer having knowledge on IT as well as agriculture,” an official involved in the investigation told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity. The investigation revealed that Hossain himself had posted some AI-generated images to his Facebook account in 2025, where he maintains a following of approximately 28,000 users.

Hossain, a resident of North Tartia village in Tangail’s Gharinda Union, was among 15 farmers selected to receive cards during the pilot phase of the government’s new farmer identification program. Local residents confirmed his long-standing connection to agriculture, though his background includes international work experience.

According to community members, Hossain studied until the eighth grade before temporarily relocating to Saudi Arabia, where he lived from 1994 to 2002. Upon returning to Bangladesh, he resumed farming activities in his home district.

“Since coming back from abroad, he’s been fully engaged in agriculture,” said Mohammad Rahman, a fellow farmer from the same village. “He applies modern techniques and often shares his knowledge with others around here.”

The controversy highlights the growing challenge of distinguishing between authentic and AI-generated content on social media platforms. As artificial intelligence tools become more sophisticated and accessible, instances of misinformation or confusion regarding identity can easily spread online.

Local inquiries indicate that Hossain represents a new generation of tech-savvy Bangladeshi farmers. While his overseas employment allowed him to achieve relative financial stability compared to many in his profession, he has leveraged his digital skills to become something of an agricultural influencer.

“He regularly produces farming videos and posts about new agricultural practices,” explained Fatema Begum, a local agricultural extension officer. “Many farmers in the area look to his content for guidance on improving their yields and implementing sustainable methods.”

Officials note that Hossain appears to have no significant political affiliations, countering suggestions that his selection for the pilot program was politically motivated. Rather, they indicate his dual knowledge of traditional farming practices and digital communication made him an ideal candidate for the initiative.

The farmer card program, launched earlier this year, aims to create a comprehensive database of Bangladesh’s agricultural workforce while providing farmers with improved access to subsidies, credit facilities, and agricultural inputs. The government plans to expand the program nationwide following the evaluation of the pilot phase.

This incident underscores the complex intersection of traditional livelihoods with modern technology in Bangladesh’s rapidly evolving agricultural sector. As digital literacy increases among rural populations, farmers like Hossain demonstrate how technological knowledge can complement agricultural expertise.

Local agricultural officials have expressed hope that the clarification regarding Hossain’s identity will redirect attention to the potential benefits of the farmer identification program itself, which seeks to address long-standing challenges in agricultural support distribution across the country.
