A fact-checking investigation has debunked viral claims that former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni criticized current head coach Gautam Gambhir. The fabricated statement, which had been circulating on social media platforms, alleged that Dhoni had publicly stated Gambhir was “ruining Indian cricket” through arbitrary decision-making.
The false narrative gained traction following a recent team dinner at Dhoni’s residence in Ranchi, where the Indian cricket team gathered during the ongoing three-match ODI series against South Africa. Gambhir’s absence from this social gathering appears to have sparked unfounded speculation, which quickly morphed into the fabricated quote being attributed to Dhoni.
Vishvas News, which conducted the investigation, found no evidence supporting the claim after reviewing Dhoni’s official social media accounts and searching for any credible news reports. Sports analyst and commentator Syed Hussain confirmed to investigators that the statement was entirely fabricated.
The misinformation originated from a Facebook account belonging to a user named ‘Arjun Kumar,’ who has approximately 29,000 followers. The post, dated November 24, 2025, falsely quoted Dhoni as saying, “Ever since Gautam Gambhir became the coach of India, everything has not been going well in the Indian team. Gambhir does as he pleases and makes decisions as per his own wish, due to which Indian cricket is getting ruined.”
This fabricated controversy comes at a time when India’s cricket team is performing well, having recently secured a 17-run victory against South Africa in the first ODI match played in Ranchi on November 30. The timing of such false claims could potentially create unnecessary tension within the team’s management structure and distract from their ongoing campaign.
The relationship between Dhoni and Gambhir has been a subject of media interest over the years, as both were integral parts of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad. Gambhir, who transitioned from player to coach, took over the head coaching position earlier this year after a successful stint in the Indian Premier League as a mentor.
Cricket analysts note that such fabricated controversies are not uncommon in Indian cricket, where the sport enjoys immense popularity and public figures like Dhoni command significant influence. False statements attributed to cricket icons can quickly go viral in a media landscape hungry for sensational content.
The Indian cricket establishment has been dealing with increased scrutiny on social media platforms, where unverified information can rapidly spread. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has previously urged fans to rely only on official communication channels for authentic information regarding team matters.
Fact-checking organizations like Vishvas News play a crucial role in combating sports-related misinformation, which can potentially harm team dynamics and public perception of sporting figures. Their investigation concluded definitively that the viral statement attributed to Dhoni about Gambhir is entirely false, with no factual basis.
As India continues its ODI series against South Africa, both the team management and cricket authorities will likely hope for the focus to return to on-field performances rather than manufactured off-field controversies.
