In the wake of Australia’s deadliest mass shooting in nearly three decades, a wave of misinformation has spread across social media platforms, falsely identifying both the hero who intervened and the attackers involved in the Bondi Beach tragedy.
At least 16 people were killed when two gunmen opened fire at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday during a gathering of approximately 1,000 people celebrating the first night of Hanukkah. The attack has shocked Australia, a nation with stringent gun control laws established following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre.
Dramatic footage captured during the incident shows a man in a white T-shirt wrestling with one of the gunmen, disarming him in an act of extraordinary courage. The hero was shot during the struggle, apparently by a second attacker firing from a nearby footbridge.
While the man’s bravery earned worldwide acclaim, it also triggered a torrent of false information about his identity. Numerous social media posts wrongly identified him as “Edward Crabtree,” described variously as a “43-year-old father of two” or a “Bondi local and IT professional.”
Australia’s Minister for Home Affairs, Tony Burke, officially confirmed during a press conference that the hero is Ahmed al Ahmed, not Edward Crabtree. Burke praised Ahmed alongside first responders for risking their lives to stop the attackers.
“The police who were there standing together against the attackers, first responders standing together against the attackers, and even a bystander like Ahmed al Ahmed, standing there putting their own lives at risk against those attackers,” Burke said.
Ahmed is currently hospitalized recovering from his injuries. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns visited him and shared a photo on Facebook, describing Ahmed as a “real-life hero” whose “incredible bravery no doubt saved countless lives.”
The false “Crabtree” narrative originated from a little-known website registered in Reykjavik, Iceland, just hours after the attack. The site contained only a handful of recently published articles, suggesting it was created specifically to spread misinformation about the incident.
Australian media have reported that Ahmed, a fruit shop owner originally from Syria, immigrated to Australia in 2006. In an interview with ABC News, his mother, Mlakeh Hasn al Ahmed, explained that her son acted when he saw the shooter had run out of ammunition.
“He saw they were dying, and people were losing their lives, and when that guy (the shooter) ran out of ammo, he took it from him, but he was hit,” she said.
The spread of misinformation extended beyond Ahmed’s identity. A separate case involved a man with the same name as one of the alleged attackers, whose photograph was falsely circulated as being one of the shooters. The innocent individual posted a video statement that gained over 2 million views, confirming that while he shares a name with one of the alleged perpetrators, he has no connection to the attack.
“That is me, and I am completely innocent and have no connection whatsoever to what happened,” he stated. “Someone is falsely using my picture, which is putting my safety, reputation, and well-being at risk.”
Police reports confirm the alleged shooters were a father and son. The 24-year-old shooter suffered critical injuries and was hospitalized after the attack, making it impossible for the man in the video to be the attacker.
Further complicating the information landscape, artificial intelligence has been weaponized to create convincing but entirely fabricated content about the attack. One AI-generated video posted on TikTok claimed to show the attackers walking on Bondi Beach before the incident. The clip, which amassed more than 270,000 views, displays telltale signs of AI generation, including unnatural patterns in figure placement, shadow inconsistencies, and unrealistic background elements.
The video shows large trees at regular intervals that follow a repeating pattern—a common artifact of AI-generated content. Comparison with authentic images of Bondi Beach reveals that the cliff formations and vegetation in the video are inaccurate.
The rapid spread of misinformation following the Bondi Beach attack highlights the increasing challenge of separating fact from fiction in crisis situations, particularly as AI tools make fabricating convincing false content increasingly accessible.
