Minnesota Day Care Donation Claim Revealed as Misinformation

A viral social media claim suggesting Minnesota day care centers donated more than $35 million to political campaigns over a two-year period has been debunked as false. The misleading information, which spread across platforms in January 2026, appears to have deliberately misrepresented data related to Minnesota’s Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP).

The false claim originated on January 1, 2026, when an X (formerly Twitter) user posted an image allegedly showing day care political donations. The post quickly gained traction as users connected it to recent high-profile cases of social services fraud in Minnesota.

An investigation found no evidence supporting the claim that day cares made such substantial political contributions. The chart featured in the viral post actually displayed CCAP funding information – not political donations – according to a “leaderboard” from a website called somaliscan.com.

CCAP, administered by the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families, provides financial assistance to help low-income families afford quality child care. The program has recently been in the news after investigations uncovered instances of fraud within the system, with some cases linked to day care centers operated by members of Minneapolis’ Somali American community.

In a telling development, the original poster later acknowledged the misleading nature of the claim in a follow-up post, writing: “WAIT BUT THATS CCAP FUNDING NOT POLITICAL GRANTS NOOOOO ITS MISINFORMATION!!!” The user then added, “We dont care. We have just stopped following the rules, like everyone else did a LONG time ago.”

Further examination of the website referenced in the post revealed several inconsistencies. The “leaderboard” displayed an unusual number of providers (11 rather than a more standard top 5 or 10), and clicking on individual provider names showed detailed breakdowns of purported CCAP funding for fiscal years 2024 and 2025.

However, while the site linked to the Minnesota Department of Human Services’ lookup page for each provider, those official government pages contained no financial information matching the figures claimed on somaliscan.com. This discrepancy raised significant red flags about the data’s authenticity.

Additionally, the website contained a crowdsourcing section calling for users to submit Freedom of Information Act requests to obtain Minnesota’s “CCAP Provider Payment Data” – listed as a “critical” priority. This suggests the site may not have had access to the very CCAP data it claimed to display in its “leaderboard.”

The false claim appears designed to exploit public concern around actual fraud cases that have been documented in Minnesota’s social services programs. In recent years, authorities have uncovered schemes where some child care providers fraudulently billed the state for services never rendered, diverting millions in public funds.

This incident highlights the increasing challenge of misinformation spreading through social media, particularly when it leverages existing public controversies. It also serves as a reminder for media consumers to verify claims, check sources, and look for inconsistencies before accepting or sharing information – especially when that information aligns with existing beliefs or concerns.

Attempts to contact both the X user who posted the claim and representatives from the website referenced in the post were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
