In a political drama unfolding in Manila, barricades and barbed wire installations around Mendiola near Malacañang Palace have sparked false claims about President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. allegedly fleeing the presidential residence.

The security measures, which include container vans and police checkpoints at strategic locations around the palace perimeter, were in fact standard preparations for anticipated anti-corruption demonstrations, primarily the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) rally held from November 16-17 at the Quirino Grandstand.

Misleading social media content, including a YouTube video posted on November 14 titled “BBM, tumakas na! Malacañang, pinalibutan ng barbed wire at barikada” (BBM has fled! Malacañang has been surrounded by barbed wire and barricades), falsely connected these security installations to allegations made by former Ako Bikol representative Zaldy Co against the President.

The video, which has garnered over 69,000 views, suggested that Marcos ordered the barricades in response to Co’s accusations regarding budget insertions. Its narrator dramatically likened the situation to the final days of the Marcos Sr. dictatorship, implying the President was no longer at the palace.

However, official records and presidential activities disprove these claims. The Presidential Communications Office has continued to document Marcos Jr.’s engagements, including his November 18 visit to typhoon-ravaged Albay province, where he personally distributed aid to affected residents.

Photos of the barricades taken by journalists from Manila Standard and The Philippine STAR confirm these were security preparations for the INC-led demonstrations. The Philippine National Police deployed approximately 16,000 officers around Manila for the event, implementing a “maximum tolerance” approach to maintain order.

The timing of the security measures coincided with Co’s series of explosive video accusations released between November 14-16. In these statements, Co alleged that President Marcos and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez had requested P100 billion in insertions for the 2025 national budget and received P25 billion in kickbacks – claims Malacañang has categorically denied.

The INC’s “justice and peace” rally, which began on November 16 at Quirino Grandstand, concluded earlier than planned on November 17. The religious organization stated the gathering aimed to demand a “proper and transparent” investigation into the multibillion-peso flood control controversy that has dominated Philippine politics in recent weeks.

Adding to the political turmoil, Senator Imee Marcos, the President’s sister, made shocking allegations during the protest, claiming her brother and the First Family are users of illegal drugs. Palace officials swiftly rejected these accusations, with Undersecretary Claire Castro referencing the President’s previous negative drug tests while questioning Senator Marcos’ motivations.

The controversy highlights the increasingly complex political landscape in the Philippines, where social media misinformation can rapidly amplify tensions during periods of political instability. The deployment of security measures around government facilities ahead of large demonstrations remains standard protocol in Manila, particularly around Malacañang Palace and other significant government buildings.

As investigations into the budget insertion allegations continue, the administration faces mounting pressure from opposition figures and civil society organizations demanding greater transparency in government financial operations.
