Manipur Launches Official Fact-Check Initiative to Combat Misinformation
The Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) of Manipur has taken a significant step to address the growing challenge of misinformation by launching “DIPR Manipur Fact Check,” a dedicated Facebook page aimed at verifying official government communications. The initiative was officially unveiled on Thursday at the DIPR Auditorium in Imphal by Information and Public Relations Secretary Hungyo Worshang, IAS.
In an era where digital misinformation has become increasingly sophisticated, the new platform will authenticate various government orders, notices, circulars, and other official communications that circulate on social media. The launch coincided with a one-day awareness program highlighting the department’s existing welfare schemes.
During the launch ceremony, Secretary Worshang emphasized the critical importance of source verification in today’s media landscape. “The digital era has brought unprecedented challenges in distinguishing fact from fiction,” Worshang noted, urging media professionals and journalists to support initiatives like the fact-check page to curb the dissemination of false information.
Dr. Th. Charanjeet Singh, MCS, Director of Information and Public Relations, explained that the fact-check initiative would coordinate directly with relevant government departments to authenticate information before it reaches the public. This process aims to provide citizens with accurate and trustworthy updates in a timely manner.
“The rise of artificial intelligence has made it increasingly difficult to distinguish genuine content from fabricated material,” Dr. Singh said. “Misleading information, rumors, and false news incite misunderstanding amongst people and pose a significant threat to peace and progress in our state.”
The initiative comes at a crucial time for Manipur, which has experienced periods of social unrest and communal tensions in recent years. By establishing an official verification channel, the government hopes to prevent the spread of inflammatory content that could potentially exacerbate existing divisions within the state.
According to Dr. Singh, the department will designate nodal officers from various government agencies to verify documents related to their respective departments before dissemination. This multi-layered verification approach aims to prevent mistrust and possible unrest arising from fake content. The director also invited stakeholders to provide suggestions to strengthen the initiative further.
The afternoon session of the event focused on media sensitization, highlighting several welfare schemes administered by DIPR Manipur. Officials provided detailed information about programs such as the Journalist Pension Scheme, the Working Journalists Welfare Scheme, press identity card issuance, accreditation processes, and the Manipur State Journalist Awards Scheme.
T. Ramesh Singh, Additional Director at DIPR, led a session on the Manipur State Journalist Awards Scheme, while Deputy Director Ph. Sheityamala Devi presented information about the Working Journalists Welfare Scheme. Ningthoujam Roshan Singh, Assistant Publicity Officer for Press at DIPR, conducted a session on the pension scheme for journalists.
The program concluded with an interactive session between media personnel and DIPR officials, fostering dialogue on how journalists and the government can collaborate to combat misinformation while supporting ethical journalism in the state.
The launch of the fact-check initiative reflects a growing trend among regional governments in India to establish formal verification mechanisms as part of their public communications strategy. Similar efforts have been implemented in other states like Kerala and Maharashtra, where dedicated fact-checking units have helped debunk rumors during crises and public emergencies.
