Liam Neeson Narrated Anti-Vaccine Documentary Despite Personal Pro-Vaccine Stance

Irish actor Liam Neeson has found himself at the center of controversy after confirmation emerged that he narrated “Plague of Corruption,” a documentary that promotes discredited anti-vaccine theories. The revelation has sparked backlash on social media, with podcast host Keith Olbermann notably posting “Goodbye, Liam Neeson” in response to the news.

The documentary, released in 2023, is based on a book by Judy Mikovits, a researcher whose claims gained traction during the COVID-19 pandemic but have been widely discredited by the scientific community. The film’s website clearly credits Neeson as the narrator, and clips circulating online feature his distinctive voice making controversial claims about vaccines.

In one particularly contentious segment available on YouTube Shorts, Neeson can be heard stating that XMRV, a virus once linked to chronic fatigue syndrome, was introduced in vaccines through “mouse tissue,” and that “chronic fatigue syndrome was the biggest health crisis since HIV” – claims that contradict established scientific consensus.

A representative for Neeson confirmed to reporters that the actor did narrate the documentary but emphasized that he does not share its anti-vaccine sentiment. “He did not shape the film’s editorial content,” the spokesperson stated, adding that “any questions about its claims or messaging should be directed to the producers.”

The spokesperson pointed to Neeson’s long-standing relationship with UNICEF as evidence of his support for vaccination programs. “We all recognize that corruption can exist within the pharmaceutical industry, but that should never be conflated with opposition to vaccines,” the representative explained. “Liam never has been, and is not, anti-vaccination. His extensive work with UNICEF underscores his long-held support for global immunization and public-health initiatives.”

Indeed, as recently as 2022, Neeson served as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador during World Immunization Week, where he described vaccines as a “remarkable human success story.” In a UNICEF video that same year, he specifically thanked Jonas Salk for developing the polio vaccine and Katalin Karikó for her groundbreaking work on mRNA technology that was instrumental in COVID-19 vaccine development.

This public stance stands in stark contrast to the documentary’s content, creating a puzzling contradiction that has left many fans and public health advocates confused. When asked why Neeson would participate in an anti-vaccination project while personally supporting vaccines, his representatives did not provide additional clarification.

The controversy highlights the ongoing challenge of combating vaccine misinformation, particularly when celebrities with large platforms become involved, intentionally or not. Public health experts have repeatedly expressed concern about how anti-vaccine content can influence public perception and potentially reduce vaccination rates for preventable diseases.

Karikó, whom Neeson previously praised, is a Hungarian-born biochemist at the University of Pennsylvania whose decades of research on therapeutic RNA led to the development of the first mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. Her work has since opened new avenues in immunology therapeutics, including potential applications in cancer treatment.

“Plague of Corruption” appears to be produced by Amigo Film Studio, though questions remain about the full extent of the production and distribution. The documentary follows in the footsteps of other controversial films like “Plandemic,” which similarly promoted conspiracy theories about vaccines and public health measures during the pandemic.

While Neeson’s representatives have attempted to distance the actor from the documentary’s message, his narration inevitably lends credibility to the production. The situation underscores the responsibility public figures have when associating themselves with controversial content, especially on matters of public health where misinformation can have serious consequences.
