Russia has accused Ukraine of attempting to attack President Vladimir Putin’s residence with drones, reviving tensions between the two nations as the conflict approaches its third year. The accusation, however, has been undermined by misinformation spreading online.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed on Monday that Ukrainian forces launched an overnight attack using 91 long-range unmanned aerial vehicles targeting Putin’s state residence in Russia’s northwestern Novgorod region. Shortly after this accusation, a video purportedly showing the attack circulated widely on social media platforms.

The footage, which shows what appears to be a drone explosion over a building complex, quickly gained traction among users sharing it as evidence of the alleged recent attack. However, a thorough investigation reveals the video is not connected to the current allegations.

A reverse image search of key frames from the video traced the footage back to May 2023. The visuals match exactly with those included in a BBC Russia report published on May 3, 2023, which detailed a separate drone incident over the Kremlin that Russian authorities had also attributed to Ukraine at that time.

Reuters and multiple other international news organizations also published the same footage in May 2023, reporting on Russia’s accusations that Ukraine had attempted to assassinate President Putin by targeting the Kremlin with drones. That alleged attack was promptly denied by Ukrainian officials at the time.

The current accusations come amid heightened tensions following Russia’s continued military campaign in Ukraine. The conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has seen periodic escalations in rhetoric and military actions from both sides.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky firmly rejected the latest Russian allegations, characterizing them as “typical Russian lies” designed to undermine diplomatic progress and justify further attacks against Ukraine.

“Russia is at it again, using dangerous statements to undermine all achievements of our shared diplomatic efforts with President Trump’s team,” Zelensky stated, suggesting the allegations were timed to disrupt ongoing peace initiatives. “This alleged ‘residence strike’ story is a complete fabrication intended to justify additional attacks against Ukraine, including Kyiv, as well as Russia’s own refusal to take necessary steps to end the war.”

The timing of Russia’s accusations coincides with increasing international pressure for renewed peace negotiations. The recycling of old footage to support current claims raises questions about the validity of Russia’s allegations and appears to follow a pattern of information warfare that has characterized much of the conflict.

Military analysts note that drone warfare has become increasingly significant in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with both sides developing sophisticated unmanned aerial capabilities. Ukraine has demonstrated the ability to strike targets deep within Russian territory, while Russia has employed massive drone and missile barrages against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

The reappearance of this footage underscores the ongoing information battle running parallel to the military conflict, with both sides seeking to control narratives around key incidents. Media literacy experts emphasize the importance of verifying visual evidence, particularly during active conflicts when misinformation can spread rapidly.

As tensions persist between the two nations, international observers remain concerned about further escalation and the potential impact on civilian populations and regional stability. Diplomatic efforts continue despite the charged rhetoric, though meaningful progress toward ending the conflict has remained elusive.
