Israeli Protest Video Debunked: Footage Actually Shows Anti-Government Demonstrations in Iran

A video circulating on social media purportedly showing massive protests in Israel has been exposed as misleading content by fact-checkers. The footage, which gained traction amid rising tensions between Israel, the United States and Iran, actually depicts anti-government demonstrations in Mashhad, Iran, from January 2026.

The misleading clip was widely shared on Facebook with captions claiming, “MASSIVE BREAKING WAR UPDATE THE WESTERN MAINSTREAM MEDIA TRIES TO HIDE: Massive Protests are spreading in Tel Aviv and all over Israel. Protesters set the streets on fire, and they are currently marching toward government buildings. Israel is in TOTAL chaos.”

Even reputable outlets like Times Now shared the video, stating that thousands of protesters had gathered in Tel Aviv amid growing uncertainty over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s absence from public view. The report claimed demonstrators were marching toward government buildings as tensions continued to rise in the ongoing Middle East conflict.

A closer examination of the footage reveals several telltale signs of its true origin. Around the 10-second mark, a banner displaying Persian or Arabic script is visible on a walkway—inconsistent with what would be expected at an Israeli protest, where Hebrew would predominate. Additionally, several vehicles in the video closely resemble the IKCO Samand, commonly referred to as Iran’s national car.

Through reverse image searches, fact-checkers traced the video to posts from late January. The footage was initially shared by the X account “Iran Human Rights” on January 30, which identified it as showing security forces opening fire on civilians in Mashhad, Iran, on January 8. A more complete version of the same video appeared on an Iranian Instagram account called “reza_shah_tous” on January 28, stating it depicted civilians being shot in front of Mashhad’s state broadcasting building.

The location was confirmed by comparing the footage with Google Maps Street View of the area surrounding the State Broadcasting Building in Mashhad. Key features from the video—including a distinctive walkway, small trees, and billboards visible in the distance—match the Iranian location.

The timing aligns with documented events in Iran earlier this year. On January 8, the BBC reported protests in Tehran and Mashhad following the collapse of the Iranian currency, noting that demonstrations had turned violent on their twelfth day, resulting in several fatalities.

While Al Jazeera and other outlets have reported some protests in Israel since the beginning of hostilities with Iran, none have described demonstrations of the scale or intensity depicted in the misattributed video.

This case illustrates the rapid spread of misinformation during international conflicts, with context-stripped footage repurposed to create false narratives. As tensions continue across the Middle East, the incident highlights the importance of verifying information before sharing, particularly during periods of geopolitical instability when accurate information is crucial.

Fact-checking organizations play a vital role in identifying and correcting such misattributions, helping to ensure public discourse is based on verified information rather than manipulated content designed to inflame emotions or distort perceptions of events unfolding in conflict zones.
