Iran Denies Reports of Indian Nationals’ Arrest During Protests

Iran’s ambassador to India has categorically rejected reports claiming that Iranian authorities arrested Indian nationals during recent protest unrest. Ambassador Mohammad Fathali took to social media platform X on Sunday to dismiss these allegations as completely false.

“The news circulated on some foreign X accounts about Iran’s developments is totally false,” Fathali stated in his post. “I request all interested people to get their news from reliable sources.”

The ambassador was responding to unverified claims circulating online that Iranian police had detained a group of 16 foreign nationals—reportedly including six Indians and ten Afghans—along with Iranian citizens allegedly involved in organizing protests. These rumors suggested the detained individuals were part of a network “responsible for organizing and carrying out the recent rioting and destruction” in Abadan, located in Iran’s southwestern Khuzestan Province.

The swift denial by Iran’s top diplomatic representative in India highlights the sensitive nature of bilateral relations between the two countries, which have maintained historically strong economic and cultural ties despite various geopolitical challenges in the region.

The false reports emerged against a backdrop of escalating protests across Iran, which have pushed the country into what observers describe as another period of political and economic uncertainty. These demonstrations represent the latest challenge to Iran’s government, which has faced recurring waves of civil unrest in recent years.

Iran, a major oil producer and influential player in Middle Eastern politics, has experienced significant internal tensions over economic conditions, political freedoms, and social policies. The country continues to grapple with the effects of international sanctions that have severely impacted its economy and limited its access to global financial systems.

The spreading of misinformation about foreign nationals’ involvement in domestic unrest is not uncommon during periods of civil disturbance. Such claims often serve to deflect attention from underlying domestic issues by suggesting external interference. The ambassador’s swift clarification appears aimed at preventing diplomatic complications and protecting the reputation of Indian nationals in Iran.

India and Iran maintain important strategic relations, particularly regarding energy security and regional connectivity initiatives. India has invested significantly in Iran’s Chabahar Port, which provides it with an alternative trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan. The two countries have also worked to maintain trade ties despite the complications of international sanctions on Iran.

The current wave of protests in Iran comes less than a year after the country faced what Ambassador Fathali referred to as “a period of war and heightened confrontation with Israel and the United States” in June 2025. This ongoing cycle of internal and external pressures continues to challenge Iran’s political stability and economic development.

Media experts note that during times of unrest, the information landscape becomes particularly vulnerable to manipulation and false reporting. The ambassador’s call for relying on “reliable sources” reflects growing concerns about the spread of misinformation during politically sensitive periods.

As the situation develops, both Iranian and Indian authorities are likely to maintain open channels of communication to address any concerns regarding the safety and status of their respective citizens. For now, the categorical denial of any arrests of Indian nationals serves to calm potential diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
