Fact Check: India Has Not Recognized Somaliland as Independent Country

A widely circulating claim suggesting that India has officially recognized Somaliland as an independent nation has been debunked as false following a thorough investigation by fact-checkers.

The investigation began with a comprehensive keyword search to identify any official statements from the Indian government regarding recognition of Somaliland. No credible reports supporting this claim were found in the search results.

Further examination of press notes and official communications from both the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) websites yielded no evidence of any such diplomatic announcement from India.

The MEA’s fact-check page on X (formerly Twitter) directly addressed the viral claim, stating: “The following post is misleading. Please remain alert!” This official clarification from India’s foreign ministry effectively puts to rest any speculation about India’s position on Somaliland’s status.

The false claim emerges against the backdrop of significant developments in the Horn of Africa. In late December 2023, Israel became the first United Nations member state to formally recognize Somaliland, a self-declared republic that broke away from Somalia in 1991. Israel and Somaliland signed a declaration to establish diplomatic relations, marking a significant shift in the region’s geopolitical landscape.

This move by Israel triggered sharp criticism from numerous international actors. Somalia, which considers Somaliland part of its sovereign territory, strongly condemned the recognition. Other nations and organizations including Turkey, Egypt, China, the African Union, and the Arab League also voiced their disapproval, characterizing Israel’s action as a violation of Somalia’s territorial integrity and international law, according to reporting by the New York Times.

Somaliland has operated as a de facto independent state for over three decades since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of Somalia’s central government. Despite maintaining its own government, currency, and security forces, Somaliland has struggled to gain international recognition, with most countries and international organizations continuing to view it as an autonomous region of Somalia rather than a sovereign state.

The spread of false information regarding India’s position on Somaliland highlights the increasingly complex nature of information flows in international affairs. With social media enabling rapid dissemination of unverified claims, the MEA’s prompt fact-check demonstrates the growing importance of official channels in countering misinformation.

India, a major power in the Global South with significant diplomatic influence, has historically maintained a policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations. Any shift in India’s position on territorial disputes or recognition of breakaway regions would represent a significant foreign policy development worthy of official announcement through established diplomatic channels.

The fact that no such announcements have been made through India’s official diplomatic apparatus confirms that there has been no change in India’s position regarding Somaliland’s status.

As the situation in the Horn of Africa continues to evolve following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, many countries are carefully calibrating their responses. For now, however, claims that India has joined Israel in recognizing Somaliland’s independence remain demonstrably false.
