Tensions Between Religious Procession and Mosque Prayer Service in Hyderabad Misrepresented Online

A viral video circulating on social media has falsely portrayed a minor confrontation in Hyderabad as a recent attack on a Ram Navami procession. An investigation reveals the footage actually shows a brief tension that occurred near Amberpet’s Jama Masjid on February 19 during a Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti procession, not during Ram Navami celebrations held on March 27.

The misleading footage was shared by a social media user with the caption, “As expected, Jihadist attack on Ram Navami processions,” suggesting it depicted religious violence during the recent Hindu festival. The video shows police personnel mediating between two groups and preventing the situation from escalating.

Multiple news organizations including Deccan Chronicle, The Hindu, and Times of India reported on the actual February incident. According to these reports, the confrontation occurred when a Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti procession passed in front of Amberpet’s Jama Masjid while Ramzan Taraweeh prayers were underway inside.

Amberpet Station House Officer (SHO) T Kiran Kumar, who was present during the incident, clarified the nature of the confrontation in an interview. “The Ramzan special Taraweeh prayers at the masjid are attended by a large crowd of people from in and around Amberpet. As the procession passed in front of the masjid, we asked the organizers to decrease the sound level of the DJ music. Meanwhile, some youth taking part in the masjid had come down. Slogans were raised by both parties,” explained Kumar.

According to Kumar, the disagreement primarily concerned noise levels. Participants in the Shivaji procession objected to the volume of the mosque’s amplified prayers, while the mosque attendees took issue with the procession’s loud music and slogans being played near their place of worship during prayer time.

“There were no attacks made by one group against another,” Kumar emphasized. “However, one man who identified himself as a YouTube creator was attacked, so we booked a case against those who attacked him.”

Police personnel on the scene quickly mediated the situation, preventing any serious confrontation between the groups. Video footage from multiple angles confirms that while there were heightened tensions and verbal exchanges, no large-scale physical altercation took place.

This type of misinformation is increasingly common on social media platforms, where footage from one incident is repurposed to suggest more recent or severe religious tensions. The misrepresentation of the February incident as a Ram Navami conflict appears designed to exacerbate religious divisions at a sensitive time.

Ram Navami, which commemorates the birth of Lord Rama, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated across India. The festival often includes processions and religious gatherings. This year’s celebrations on March 27 occurred during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, creating a period when religious sensitivities can be heightened.

The incident highlights the important role of local police in mediating potential conflicts between religious groups, particularly when processions pass near places of worship during prayer times. It also demonstrates how quickly misinformation can spread online when context is removed from visual content.

Multiple fact-checking organizations and news outlets have since verified the original context of the footage, helping to correct the record about what actually transpired in Hyderabad in February.

Social media platforms continue to struggle with the rapid spread of misleading content, especially when it involves religiously sensitive issues that can inflame communal tensions. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying information before sharing potentially inflammatory content online.
