Police Parade Video Falsely Framed as Communal Incident, Investigation Reveals

A viral video showing police officers parading and beating three young men dressed in black has sparked controversy across social media platforms, with misleading communal claims attached to the footage. The video, which has been widely shared, was accompanied by false claims that the men were Muslims named Mohammad Sameer, Nadeem, and Asif Ali who had been apprehended for allegedly harassing Hindu girls outside a college.

An investigation by India Today Fact Check has debunked these claims, revealing that the individuals in the video are actually Hindu youths involved in a vandalism case that took place in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh on April 16. The investigation found no communal element to the incident, which instead stemmed from a dispute over a car wash service.

According to a report aired on MP Talk’s YouTube channel on April 20, the men in the video were arrested after vandalizing cars, motorcycles, and residential properties in Ujjain following the dispute. The police reportedly arrived at the scene an hour after the vandalism took place, by which time the suspects had already fled. However, authorities managed to apprehend several suspects within 24 hours of the incident.

Navbharat Times reported that the incident began when Sheran Ali, who operates a car wash center on MR-5 Road in Ujjain, declined to wash a vehicle belonging to the group due to time constraints. Angered by the refusal, five men later arrived at Sheran’s residence in Bafna Park Colony around 2 AM on April 17 and vandalized his property for approximately an hour.

After reviewing CCTV footage of the incident, police identified and arrested three of the five suspects: Kishan Ahirwar, Vishal Sawariya, and Vikas Sawariya. The viral video shows these three men being taken to the scene of the crime, where they were subsequently beaten by police officers – a controversial police practice that has raised questions about due process and treatment of suspects.

When contacted by India Today Fact Check for clarification, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alok Sharma of Ujjain confirmed that the three individuals in the video were Hindus, not Muslims as claimed in the viral posts. He verified the names of the arrested suspects and emphasized that the case had no connection to allegations of Muslim youths harassing Hindu girls.

ASP Sharma also noted that two additional suspects – Rishi Mishra and Sahil Gurjar – remain at large, with police actively searching for them.

This incident highlights a concerning trend of ordinary crime being reframed with false communal narratives on social media platforms. Such misrepresentation can potentially inflame tensions between religious communities and complicate law enforcement efforts.

The false claims surrounding this video appear to be part of a pattern where criminal incidents are deliberately given communal angles to stoke religious tensions. Fact-checking organizations have increasingly found themselves working to debunk such narratives before they can cause social harm.

This case also raises questions about police conduct during arrests and the practice of public shaming of suspects, which continues in some parts of India despite criticism from human rights organizations.

As social media continues to serve as a rapid distribution channel for both news and misinformation, this incident underscores the importance of verifying claims before sharing potentially inflammatory content, particularly when it involves sensitive communal matters in diverse societies.
