Super PAC Ad Against Rep. Massie Distorts Voting Record on Trump Policies

A new attack ad by MAGA Kentucky targeting Republican Rep. Thomas Massie misrepresents the congressman’s voting record on key Trump administration policies, according to an analysis of his legislative history and public statements.

The 30-second broadcast and digital ad, part of a reported $1 million campaign launched in late June, portrays Massie as aligned with “radical Democrats” on several high-profile issues. The ad specifically claims Massie voted against President Trump’s tax cuts, border wall funding, and a ban on taxpayer-funded gender-affirming surgeries for minors.

However, these claims distort Massie’s actual voting record. The ad references Massie’s opposition to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), which he voted against in both the initial House version on May 22 and the final Senate version on July 3. Only one other Republican joined him in opposition.

While the bill addressed all three policy areas mentioned in the ad, Massie’s stated opposition focused on fiscal concerns rather than disagreement with the specific policies themselves. In multiple interviews, the Kentucky congressman has emphasized that his vote against the legislation stemmed from concerns about its impact on the national debt.

“Although there were some conservative wins in the budget reconciliation bill, I voted No on final passage because it will significantly increase U.S. budget deficits in the near term, negatively impacting all Americans through sustained inflation and high interest rates,” Massie explained on social media platform X after his vote.

Contrary to the ad’s first claim, Massie actually supported Trump’s 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and has repeatedly advocated for extending its provisions. “I’m for the tax cuts, extending those tax cuts. I voted for those in 2017,” Massie stated in a May interview with Newsmax. Independent analyses have indicated the OBBBA would add trillions to the federal deficit over a decade.

On border security, Massie has consistently backed wall construction funding, including co-sponsoring 2023 legislation seeking $15 billion for border wall construction. He also voted to provide more than $5 billion for Trump’s border wall in fiscal year 2019.

Regarding gender-affirming care, Massie has consistently opposed such procedures for minors and sought amendments to address federal jurisdiction in these cases. He pointed out that the Senate version of the OBBBA actually removed the ban on funding such procedures that had been in the initial bill.

The ad appears to be the latest chapter in a long-running feud between Massie and Trump. Their political friction dates back to at least 2020, when Massie attempted to block Trump’s $2 trillion COVID-19 stimulus package, prompting the then-president to label him a “third rate Grandstander.” More recently, Massie endorsed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the Republican presidential primary and criticized Trump’s military actions in Iran.

Trump has vowed to endorse a primary challenger against Massie in 2026, calling him “a LOSER” and “weak, ineffective” on his Truth Social platform. Trump advisers are reportedly seeking a viable opponent for the 2026 primary.

Despite these challenges, Massie appears prepared for the political battle ahead. He has accumulated a $1.7 million war chest, including $584,000 raised between April and June. He also enjoys support from Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who plans to endorse him, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has indicated he will donate to Massie’s campaign.

Massie has represented Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District since 2012 and has handily defeated primary challengers in the last three election cycles, winning 75% of the vote in both 2024 and 2022, and 81% in 2020.
