Finnish Court Has Not Released Simon Ekpa, Despite Viral Social Media Claims
Viral social media posts claiming that a Finnish court has ordered the release of pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa are false, according to an investigation into the matter. The unverified claims, which have spread widely across Facebook and Instagram, also incorrectly state that Ekpa received $50,000 in compensation after the Nigerian government allegedly failed to appear in court.
The misinformation has circulated primarily through a copy-and-paste campaign among social media accounts loyal to the separatist leader. One Facebook page called “I News,” which boasts over 167,000 followers, was among those publishing the false information.
The viral posts feature alleged quotes from both an unnamed judge and Ekpa himself. The supposed judicial statement claims Ekpa’s detention was “unlawful and politically motivated” and that he has “every right to express his views and defend the interests of his people.” The fabricated quote attributed to Ekpa states: “They tried to silence me, but truth cannot be imprisoned. This victory is not mine alone—it belongs to the people of Biafra and everyone fighting for justice.”
In reality, Ekpa remains imprisoned following his conviction on September 1, 2024, by the Päijät-Häme district court in Finland. A three-member panel of judges found him guilty of serious charges, including terrorism offenses, and sentenced him to six years in prison. The court determined that Ekpa had used his “significant social media following” to inflame tensions in Nigeria’s southeastern region between August 2021 and November 2024.
The Finnish court also convicted Ekpa of aggravated tax fraud and violations of Finland’s attorneys’ act, further cementing the seriousness of his legal situation.
Under Finnish law, Ekpa has a 30-day window to appeal the district court’s judgment, meaning any appeal would need to be filed by October 1, 2025. At the time of this report, there is no confirmation whether Ekpa has filed such an appeal. Attempts to reach his lawyer, Kaarle Gummerus, for comment on this matter have been unsuccessful.
A comprehensive search across Finnish media platforms has yielded no credible reports supporting claims of Ekpa’s release. No Finnish appeals court has heard Ekpa’s case since his initial conviction on September 1, contradicting the viral social media narrative.
The fabricated story appears designed to bolster morale among Ekpa’s supporters, particularly those advocating for Biafran independence in Nigeria. The separatist movement has maintained a significant online presence despite governmental opposition in Nigeria.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of misinformation surrounding politically sensitive cases, particularly those with international dimensions. Social media platforms continue to serve as fertile ground for the spread of false information that can quickly reach thousands of users before being debunked.
Finnish authorities have not issued any statements regarding the false claims, maintaining their position on Ekpa’s conviction and sentencing as initially reported. The Nigerian government has also remained silent on these fabricated developments, having previously expressed satisfaction with the Finnish court’s original ruling against the separatist leader.
As of October 22, Simon Ekpa remains in Finnish custody serving his six-year sentence, with no court-ordered release or compensation as falsely claimed in the viral social media posts.
