The video circulating on Facebook purportedly showing protesters demanding President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s resignation has been confirmed as fraudulent, according to digital forensic analysis.
The deceptive footage, which garnered over 1,100 reactions and hundreds of shares since its November 20 posting, depicts individuals holding placards while a man chants in Filipino: “BBM, resign now! Imee has exposed your drug use and corruption; you must be held accountable! Marcos uses drugs, there’s no justice, we the people are angry!”
Two independent AI detection tools confirmed the video’s artificial nature. Hive Moderation flagged the content as 99.9% likely to contain AI-generated elements, while Deepware’s analysis showed similar results, with its Seferbekov model detecting a 95% probability of deepfake manipulation and its Ensemble model indicating an 81% likelihood.
Close visual examination reveals telltale signs of artificial generation, including pixelated flickers in faces, bodies, and background elements when the footage is played at slower speeds. The protest signs in the video display distorted or nonsensical text, another common indicator of AI-generated imagery.
The timing of this fabricated content is particularly significant, emerging amid a period of genuine political turmoil in the Philippines. The country has recently experienced several large-scale demonstrations, though most did not explicitly call for Marcos’ resignation until very recently.
On November 30, authentic protests did feature calls for Marcos to step down. At Manila’s Luneta Park, demonstrators demanded the resignation of both President Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte, while a separate gathering at the EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City sought accountability from both leaders and their political allies for what protesters described as systemic injustice.
The false video surfaces during a turbulent period for the Marcos administration, which faces serious allegations of corruption and substance abuse. In November, former congressman Zaldy Co released a series of videos accusing Marcos and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez of inserting P100 billion in questionable allocations into the 2025 national budget – claims that Malacañang Palace has firmly denied.
Perhaps most damaging to the President’s public image are the accusations from his own sister, Senator Imee Marcos, who publicly labeled her brother and members of the First Family as “drug addicts” during a speech at an Iglesia ni Cristo rally.
Despite these mounting pressures, Palace officials maintain that resignation is not being considered by the President. Undersecretary Claire Castro, speaking for the administration, has explicitly stated that stepping down is not on Marcos’ agenda.
The emergence of this sophisticated AI-generated content highlights the growing challenge of disinformation in Philippine politics, where digital manipulation increasingly blurs the line between fact and fiction. As tensions between political factions intensify, the potential for such fabricated content to influence public opinion becomes an increasingly pressing concern for both journalists and citizens.
