Trump’s Litany of Lies Goes Unchallenged in “60 Minutes” Interview

Four years ago today, Americans cast their ballots in what would become a pivotal presidential election. After several tense days of vote counting, Joe Biden emerged victorious over Donald Trump, though the former president continues to dispute the results to this day.

The contrast between that historic moment and America’s current political landscape couldn’t be more stark, as the nation now grapples with day 33 of a government shutdown under Trump’s second administration.

Travelers across the country are experiencing firsthand the shutdown’s impact, with airport security lines stretching outside terminals. “Sorry, shutdown,” has become the standard response from beleaguered airport staff as passengers struggle to make their flights on time.

In a much-anticipated “60 Minutes” interview Sunday night, President Trump sat down with CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell for what was promoted as a hard-hitting conversation. Instead, viewers witnessed 73 minutes of largely unchallenged falsehoods, with only 28 minutes making it to air.

Media critics noted the irony that Trump successfully sued CBS for editing their 2024 interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, yet the network significantly trimmed his own interview without apparent concern.

The full interview, available online with its complete transcript, highlights everything wrong with American political journalism. O’Donnell’s questioning style was notably deferential, eschewing follow-ups and real-time fact-checking in favor of superficial inquiries like “Who’s tougher to deal with, Vladimir Putin or Xi Jinping?” and “Do you worry about an AI bubble?”

Trump’s unchecked statements included claims that he “solved eight out of nine wars on our planet,” that “we have no inflation” (actual rate: 3%), that the U.S. was “a dead country a year ago” (despite having the fastest-growing G7 economy), and that “11,888 murderers were let into our country” (a figure fact-checkers have repeatedly debunked).

Perhaps most disturbing was Trump’s continued insistence that “the 2020 election was rigged,” followed by the alarming assertion that “a lotta people say when it’s rigged you’re allowed to do it again” – a statement that runs counter to constitutional principles.

When discussing his public Truth Social posts instructing Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate political opponents like Letitia James and James Comey, O’Donnell merely asked if he had given such instructions rather than questioning the propriety or legality of such actions.

Trump himself seemed pleased with the soft handling, telling O’Donnell during the interview: “You’re a wonderful reporter, you’re very talented,” before praising CBS News’s leadership. The exchange underscored the deeply problematic relationship between mainstream media and a president who has routinely attacked press freedom.

Meanwhile, other significant developments have received less attention. The U.S. military conducted another strike on a suspected drug boat in the Caribbean, killing all three individuals aboard – the 15th such attack since September. UN experts have characterized these operations as “extrajudicial killings.”

In domestic politics, Democrats have opened their largest lead in congressional polling since 2018, according to NBC News, prompting Republicans to accelerate gerrymandering efforts ahead of the 2026 elections.

The shutdown continues to threaten vital services, with a federal judge ordering the Department of Agriculture to provide SNAP food benefits using emergency funds. However, the judge has argued the USDA should identify additional resources to provide full benefits rather than the partial funding currently allocated.

While millions of Americans struggle with the shutdown’s effects, Trump attended a Great Gatsby-themed Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago Friday night. When Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was questioned about the optics of such an event during an economic crisis, he deflected by criticizing former President Obama’s golfing habits.

As one Trump adviser acknowledged to reporters off the record, the lavish party wasn’t “a good look” while food benefits expire and health insurance premium increases loom – creating uncomfortable parallels to the excesses of the 1920s that preceded the Great Depression.

With election day approaching and several high-profile legal challenges to Trump administration policies heading to court this week, the country finds itself at another pivotal moment, four years after the election that Trump still refuses to accept.
