In a recent surge of political misinformation, social media users have been misled by an AI-generated image supposedly showing a giant inflatable figure of Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance displayed as part of the White House Halloween decorations.
The fabricated image appeared on X (formerly Twitter) on October 30, 2025, with the caption: “BREAKING: The White House Halloween decorations just got leaked to the public. A giant inflatable JD Vance can be spotted posted in front.” The post quickly gained traction among users who believed it represented actual decorations at the presidential residence.
An investigation by fact-checkers revealed the image bears no resemblance to the actual Halloween decorations displayed at the White House this year. Official footage and photographs of the White House Halloween event, where the president and first lady hosted trick-or-treaters, have been published on the official White House website and show no such inflatable figure.
The source of the misleading content was traced to an AI-generated video published earlier the same day on X. The video contains clearly fictional elements, including the inflatable “Vance” character unnaturally rising from its knees and running – physical movements impossible for an actual inflatable decoration. The video also depicts a woman jumping on a broomstick and flying away, further confirming its fabricated nature.
This incident highlights the growing challenge of distinguishing between authentic and AI-generated content on social media platforms. As artificial intelligence tools become more sophisticated and widely available, users increasingly encounter convincing but entirely fictional images presented as real news.
The timing of this fabricated content is particularly noteworthy as it emerged during the heated final days of a presidential campaign season. Misinformation experts have warned that election periods typically see an uptick in false and misleading content designed to influence public opinion or simply generate engagement through provocative claims.
White House Halloween celebrations have become a tradition stretching back decades, with presidents and first ladies often using the occasion to welcome local children and families for trick-or-treating on the White House grounds. These events typically feature seasonal decorations, costumed staff, and themed activities, but remain apolitical in nature.
Social media platforms have implemented various measures to combat the spread of AI-generated misinformation, including labeling policies and detection tools. However, users are increasingly encouraged to verify information through multiple sources before accepting or sharing potentially misleading content.
This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly false information can spread online and the importance of critical media literacy. Experts recommend looking for inconsistencies in images, checking official sources, and being particularly cautious about politically charged content shared during election seasons.
As the boundary between authentic and synthetic media continues to blur, the responsibility falls increasingly on both platforms and users to verify information before accepting it as fact – particularly when claims appear designed to provoke strong emotional or political reactions.

The cost guidance is better than expected. If they deliver, the stock could rerate.
