A viral video depicting chaos at what was falsely claimed to be an attack on a Catholic school in Telangana has been debunked as footage from an entirely different incident, an investigation has revealed.

The video, which shows a large crowd rushing around and throwing cartons, was widely shared on social media with claims that it showed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) members attacking St. Mother Teresa Catholic School in Mancherial, Telangana.

One user posted the video on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption: “After attacking Muslims, RSS extremists have now turned their violence towards Christians. At St. Mother Teresa Catholic School in Mancherial, Telangana, they attacked the principal, Fr. Raimon Joseph, and forcibly marked his forehead with a tilak. This is not Gandhi’s India.”

However, fact-checking efforts by India Today have determined the footage actually depicts a chaotic scene from a mass wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district, where attendees looted snacks and food items.

The video was originally shared by Jist News on Instagram on November 27. According to their post, the incident occurred when wedding guests rushed toward snack counters after ceremonies concluded at a government-sponsored mass wedding, creating a stampede-like situation that reportedly resulted in injuries as people fell.

Further verification through multiple news outlets confirmed the event took place on November 25 at Swami Brahmanand Vidyalaya’s playground in Rath town, Hamirpur. The Indian Express reported that the chaos erupted when guests began grabbing snack boxes and other food items distributed at the government-organized mass wedding.

The investigation found no credible news reports of any recent attack matching the description in the viral claims. However, there was an unrelated incident in April 2024 involving a missionary-run school in Mancherial district, Telangana. In that case, reports indicate that a group of villagers attacked a school after students wearing saffron religious clothing were reportedly told their parents needed prior approval for them to attend without standard uniforms.

According to media reports of that April incident, some individuals surrounded a principal named Joseph, assaulted him, and forcibly applied a tilak on his forehead. This appears to be the incident that was incorrectly associated with the wedding video.

The misleading claims highlight an increasingly common problem on social media platforms, where unrelated videos are repurposed to promote divisive narratives about religious tensions. This pattern of misinformation is particularly concerning in regions with histories of communal sensitivity.

Uttar Pradesh, where the actual incident took place, has seen previous instances of chaos at mass wedding ceremonies, which are often sponsored by government welfare programs to assist economically disadvantaged couples. Such events typically provide food, gifts, and basic household items to newlyweds.

The misattribution of the video comes amid heightened scrutiny of religious relations in India, where incidents involving religious institutions occasionally trigger broader social tensions.

Fact-checking organizations continue to play a crucial role in combating such misinformation, particularly when it involves inflammatory claims that could potentially exacerbate religious divisions. The incident serves as a reminder for social media users to verify information before sharing potentially misleading content that could contribute to communal discord.
