BJP’s Support for Mamata Banerjee? Misleading Video Creates Political Confusion

A video circulating on social media purportedly showing Defense Minister Rajnath Singh declaring the Bharatiya Janata Party’s support for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been debunked as misleading. The clip, which gained traction ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections scheduled for April 23 and 29, shows Singh saying, “Bharatiya Janata Party is with Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal.”

Investigation reveals the footage is actually from 2006, taken completely out of context and misleadingly presented as a recent endorsement. The 16-year-old clip has been strategically edited to create the false impression of a current political alliance between the BJP and Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The original video appeared on Bengali news outlet ABP Ananda’s YouTube channel on January 8, as part of a larger segment examining the BJP’s historical stance on the Singur protests. The news segment included archival footage from December 3, 2006, showing various political alignments during that period. Singh’s statement was specifically made in the context of the Singur land acquisition controversy, not current electoral politics.

“This kind of video manipulation is becoming increasingly common during election seasons,” noted a political analyst who tracks misinformation trends. “Voters should be particularly vigilant about verifying political content before sharing it on social media.”

The Singur controversy was a defining moment in West Bengal’s political landscape. In 2006, the then-ruling CPI(M) government acquired agricultural land in Singur for a Tata Motors factory to manufacture the Nano car. The acquisition sparked massive protests led by Mamata Banerjee, who was in opposition at that time.

According to reports from The Times of India dated December 27, 2006, after initially maintaining a cautious approach to the controversy, the BJP eventually came out in support of Banerjee’s hunger strike against the land acquisition. Rajnath Singh, who was BJP president at that time, visited Banerjee during her fast and expressed solidarity with the farmers’ cause.

The controversy ultimately led to Tata Motors abandoning the project in 2008 and relocating to Gujarat. In 2016, the Supreme Court ruled the land acquisition illegal and ordered the return of land to farmers, vindicating the position taken by protesters.

The current political reality in West Bengal presents a stark contrast to the 2006 scenario. The BJP and TMC have been fierce political rivals in recent years, with the BJP emerging as the principal opposition to Banerjee’s government. The two parties have engaged in bitter electoral battles, most notably in the 2021 Assembly elections where the TMC secured a decisive victory despite an aggressive BJP campaign.

Social media platforms have seen a surge in politically motivated misinformation as West Bengal approaches its Assembly elections. Election watchdogs have cautioned voters to verify information from multiple credible sources before accepting claims made in viral videos, particularly those showing apparent political alliances or policy shifts.

The misleading clip highlights the challenges voters face in distinguishing authentic political communications from manipulated content. Digital literacy experts recommend checking the date and complete context of political videos before drawing conclusions, especially when they appear to show dramatic shifts in political alliances.

As campaigning intensifies in West Bengal, both the BJP and TMC have deployed significant resources to reach voters through traditional and digital channels, making the information ecosystem particularly vulnerable to manipulation and misrepresentation.
